This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Tribute combines one of Chevrolet's most recognizable muscle-car bodies with big-block power, an excellent color combination, and the extensive attention to detail expected from a frame-off restoration.
The body has been restored in its factory-correct Hugger Orange, supported by the trim tag showing paint code 72, and is contrasted by a black vinyl roof and black SS accent striping. The color absolutely fits the aggressive lines of the '69 Chevelle, while the chrome bumpers, stainless trim, quad headlights, SS 396 grille emblem, rear SS 396 treatment, and SS fender badging complete the period muscle-car presentation.
Under the hood sits a 396ci Chevrolet big-block V8 topped with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and aluminum intake manifold. Chrome valve covers and a chrome 396 Turbo-Jet-style air cleaner give the engine compartment the proper vintage appearance. Electronic ignition has also been incorporated for improved reliability and drivability.
Backing the big block is the desirable Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission, sending power rearward to a GM 12-bolt differential. The combination of a 396, TH400, and 12-bolt is exactly the type of heavy-duty drivetrain hardware enthusiasts expect from a properly equipped big-block Chevelle.
The chassis is equipped with power steering, power front disc brakes, and a front sway bar, making the car considerably more enjoyable to operate than a bare-bones muscle car. Underneath, photographs show a very clean presentation with extensive restoration work visible throughout the floors, chassis, suspension, drivetrain, fuel tank, and exhaust system. A 2½-inch dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers gives the big block the deep exhaust note expected from an SS.
The stance remains appropriately traditional thanks to 15-inch aluminum five-spoke wheels finished with polished outer rims and black centers. They are wrapped in Goodyear Wingfoot HP raised-white-letter tires, preserving the classic muscle-car look rather than moving to an oversized modern wheel package.
Inside is a clean black bucket-seat interior featuring a center console, floor-mounted automatic shifter, SS identification, and a three-spoke Comfort-Grip-style steering wheel. The factory-style instrument cluster is complemented by a trio of auxiliary gauges mounted beneath the dash for additional engine monitoring. Black carpeting, matching door panels, rear seating, and headliner complete a cohesive interior that stays faithful to the period.
The trunk has received the same level of attention, with a correct-style spatter finish, spare tire, jack components, and factory-style instruction and limited-slip warning decals. These small finishing details help separate a thorough restoration from one focused only on exterior cosmetics.
With its Hugger Orange paint, black vinyl roof, 396 big block, Turbo 400 automatic, 12-bolt rear, bucket seats, console, power steering, power disc brakes, and frame-off restoration, this Chevelle captures exactly what enthusiasts want from a late-'60s Chevrolet muscle car: unmistakable styling, big-block character, and a highly presentable restoration that can be shown, driven, and enjoyed.
