"1968 Plymouth Road Runner Coupe
""Plymouth paid Warner Bros. $50,000 for rights to decorate the new model with the name and likeness of a cartoon bird. It was just the right touch. The Road Runner became a smash hit. Plymouth forecasted sales of 2,500; buyers snapped up nearly 45,000. Motor Trend called it 'the most brazenly pure, non compromising super car in history...its simplicity is a welcome virtue.'"" Musclecars.howstuffworks.com
For consignment, a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner coupe with a title verified 17,928 actual miles. Owned by our consignor for 22 years, this car features period-correct 440ci V8, disc brakes up front, and TTI exhaust that begins with headers.
Exterior
An astounding 21 color options were available for the Road Runner in '68 including a silver, so it's no wonder this one looks so good in two stage Silver Metallic with the ideal complement of a black vinyl top and a little pizazz with an oxblood pinstripe. A black and silver road runner cartoon appears on each door while the full color version, at full stride, is depicted on the rear trim panel that's framed in red reflector that connects with the wide tail lights. While we're back here, let's note the chrome exhaust tips that put an exclamation mark on this muscle car under the very nice chrome bumper. Up front, the serious glare of the quad headlights is enhanced with the power bulges on the hood. 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels with black accenting are the perfect shoes and they wear staggered size tires to drive the muscle point home! With meticulous inspection, we note some imperfection you might otherwise not see. They include a bubbles and a chip in the vinyl top, various inclusions in the paint, brush-like marks, chips, an arching scratch on the windshield, paint runs on the rocker panel, light bubbling on the door, scratches, pitted filler, orange peel, and some clear runs.
Interior
A shiny black door header hover over the vinyl door cards and both present nicely. Inside, the split bench is also black vinyl with ribbed inserts and cabochon ornamentation on the back and both the front and rear seats are flawless with the exception of a loose seam on the passenger side. Our black steering wheel fronts a decidedly horizontal display that includes the sweeping speedometer, small integrated tachometer, and the usual gauges in sweep format. A temp gauge dangles from the dash and the radio in place is your basic AM unit under the top mounted vent controls. With the shifter on the column, the floor is open and covered with black carpet in good shape while above the headliners presents nicely too. The trunk shows some patina with surface rust and peeling paint, but the plaid mat inside is clean.
Drivetrain
A great looking bay holds a 440ci V8, period correct and fueled by an Edelbrock AVS 800cfm carburetor. Yes, 800cfm! It's mated to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to an 8 ¾ inch rear axle with 3.23 gears. Headers are on board.
Undercarriage
Generally clean conditions underneath, in fact very clean save for the oil sling from the front and rear U-joints and some residual oil on the trans pan. The dual TTI exhaust flows through Dynomax mufflers on its way to that chrome tipped exit. Disc brakes and torsion bars are up front while drum brakes and leaf springs occupy the rear of the car.
Drive-Ability
Mopar or no car, at least for this short test drive around the loop! A fantastic exhaust note is matched with obvious good power underfoot and a more relaxed ride thanks to the automatic. Other than the radio, everything works on this example and it's into the showroom it goes, like a silver bullet! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
These were considered budget muscle cars back in the day but are now coveted classics. And of course, '68 features the circular side marker lights so they're easy to identify on the street, or more likely, at the car show! This is a stunner; a real show and go B-body!
