"1968 Oldsmobile 442 2 Door Holiday Coupe
1968 was a banner year for the Oldsmobile A-body. This was the first year of the Hurst/Olds partnership which resulted in a special edition 442 that wore Peruvian Silver and black before the familiar gold and white palette used later. 1968 would also have styling cues that would be one year only, making them instantly recognizable and unique.
For consignment, a 1968 Oldsmobile 442 2 door Holiday Coupe showing 78,066 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. This survivor comes out of 40 years of storage and not only functions well, but retains its numbers matching drivetrain.
Exterior
Code RR dictates Scarlet Red paint and if we had to guess, we're probably looking at original paint that's a bit weathered and faded in its single stage application and of course, the horizontal panels fare a touch worse than the vertical. But the panels are mostly straight here, and the trim is not bad, including the simulated vents on the hood. 15-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels stand out with a red trim line and 225/70R15 tires with a mid 2025 date code and a combination of Chevrolet and Oldsmobile center caps. Along with the usual fading, other imperfections include numerous, surface rust facing scratches and chips, some pitted surface rust on the bumpers, a broken bumper filler, brightwork that will need a refresh and corrosion underneath it, a milky discoloration on the hood, rust through around the rear window and on the decklid, crazing in the paint, and rot on the front left fender and along bottom edges.
Interior
This red on red car features a Garnet interior, beginning with vinyl door panels and given the condition of the exterior, in surprisingly nice shape. Bucket seats occupy the front and the perforated inserts are slightly detached and there's some age cracking in the vinyl, but we've seen worse and the rear bench remains in excellent condition. As it happens, the steering wheel rim is cracked in several places and it leads to a relatively clean dashboard with three red coves housing gauges, a speedometer, and tachometer. The black plastic mid dash houses the vent levers and AM radio under a dome light while 442 is displayed on the glovebox. We note the dash pad is cracked and there's some fading in the Garnet loop carpet below, now covered with bright red mats. The legendary Hurst shifter emerges from the slightly aging center console while a Garnet headliner looms overhead in good condition. The trunk has its share of surface rust and a few rust holes on the floor and on the lid itself.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions prevail underneath where we find the numbers matching 400ci V8, rated at 325 horsepower and fueled with a 4-barrel carburetor. One ""4"" accounted for! Next, we have the numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission behind it, (that's our second ""4""), and it sends power to the 12 bolt rear axle. Power steering is on board.
Undercarriage
A pair of newer stock style mufflers for the dual exhaust, (completing our search for 4-4-two!), stand out amongst an otherwise driver quality underside and the transmission is clean as well. Drum brakes occupy each corner and coil springs are at both ends with a 4 link in the back. Just some metal oxidation and surface rust but the pans look good!
Drive-Ability
We take a seat in this survivor and crank the engine which comes alive with a healthy rumble and with newer tires on board, we take a lap on the test loop to find good power, crisp shifts, and straight tracking. The wipers knob is stripped, but the wipers do work, and the clock is not working but all other functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
With some body and paint work, you could own a snappy numbers matching Oldsmobile 442, one of the legends of the muscle car era and an A-body design. This one has good bones as they say, and presents a unique opportunity for the hobbyist and collector alike.
