No Reserve Classics is proud to present to you our Extremely Rare 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback R Code 428 Cobra Jet 4 Speed 135 Series - The Third Built of Only 50 Ever Made!
In the heart of the muscle car era, where performance ruled the streets and drag strips, Ford made a thunderous statement with the introduction of the 1968 ""135-Series"" Mustang Cobra Jet. This particular car, chassis #135009, is the number 3 out of 50 factory drag racing Mustangs ever produced and it stands today as a living, breathing icon of Ford's legacy in motorsport.
Built for a single purpose to dominate NHRA Stock Class racing the 135-Series Mustangs were not ordinary showroom cars. They were born out of a desire to bring street racers closer to factory performance, and this example, the third produced, is as real and rare as it gets.
A Factory Drag Racer with a Legendary Origin
Back in 1967, Ford needed a way to showcase its brand-new 428ci Cobra Jet V8 to the racing world. Thanks to the efforts of Bob Tasca Sr. and the team at Tasca Ford, the Cobra Jet engine became a factory-backed monster that could outrun anything in its path. But before these cars could hit the strip in NHRA-sanctioned events, Ford had to homologate them. The solution? A small batch of just 50 specially prepped Mustangs-designated as the ""135-Series.""
Each one was delivered in Wimbledon White over black vinyl, powered by the new 428 Cobra Jet V8, and paired with a heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission. This car-delivered new to Paul Harvey Ford in Indianapolis-was intended to be a street-legal factory drag car, made to compete from day one.
Legacy: The ""135-Series"" That Changed Everything
What makes this Mustang truly special is its place in history. Known as car #135009, it is the third Cobra Jet Mustang ever produced in the legendary 135-series batch. Ford built these cars with one goal in mind: to dominate the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, and they did just that-scoring a historic win in Super Stock Eliminator thanks to Al Joniec's blistering 11.49-second quarter mile.
Of the 50 built, many were raced, wrecked, or lost to time. Only about half are known to still exist today-and very few remain as clean, complete, and documented as this one.
A Piece of Muscle Car Royalty
From its historic role in the 1968 NHRA debut to its meticulously documented rebuild, this 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback 135-Series Cobra Jet is a piece of living performance history. Whether you're a collector, a lifelong Mustang enthusiast, or someone who simply appreciates the raw purity of purpose-built American muscle-this car delivers on every level.
Ford built just 50 of these. This is #3.
Under the hood of this 1968 Mustang Fastback lies a fully rebuilt 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8 engine, an icon of Ford's high-performance legacy. The engine has been bored .030"" over and equipped with new pistons, bearings, and valves for improved strength and reliability. A COMP camshaft enhances the engine's breathing and performance characteristics, while fuel is delivered by a period-correct Carter X fuel pump to a December 1967dated 4-barrel carburetor, offering both historical authenticity and robust performance. Shifting is handled by a stout 4-speed Toploader manual transmission, paired with a McLeod clutch and pressure plate for smooth, confident engagement under power.
The exterior has been refinished in classic white, staying true to the car's factory-correct look while turning heads with its aggressive presence. Flared rear wheel arches make room for larger tires, hinting at its competition heritage. The car rides on staggered-width 15"" Cragar chromed steel wheels wrapped in 5.60-15 Pro-Trac tires up front and L60-15 Goodyear Rally GT rubber in the rear. Braking is managed by unassisted drum brakes at all four corners, delivering raw, mechanical feedback.
Inside, the cabin is all business with factory-style black vinyl bucket seats up front and a folding rear bench. A two-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of functional temperature gauges and an aftermarket gauge pod mounted beneath the dash, offering additional monitoring for oil pressure, water temperature, and electrical system health. It's a purposeful interior, focused entirely on the driving experience.
Underneath, the car continues to impress with a 3.50:1 Ford 9"" rear end, strengthened with 31-spline axle shafts for added durability. The dual exhaust system features factory Cobra Jet exhaust manifolds, an H-pipe, and Flowmaster mufflers, providing a deep, aggressive tone that announces its performance intentions. Drum brakes and a Toploader four-speed transmission round out the underbody setup, staying true to its original mechanical character.
This Mustang doesn't just wear its heritage-it lives it. Every detail, from its drivetrain to its stance, reflects a purpose-built muscle car engineered to deliver raw, unfiltered performance.

At the age of 18, Joe purchased his first classic car – a 1972 Chevelle SS454 WVIN – and was bit by the bug ever since. He continued buying classic cars and found the rush of purchasing, restoring and driving these symbolic machines of American heritage very addictive. After realizing that his parent’s garage was not big enough to hold them all, he then started to rent a small warehouse. His girlfriend at the time, now his lovely wife, sat him down one day and told him that he had an issue. He was also advised to, moving forward, sell a car before he could buy another one. At that point, through many walks of life, he realized that there are plenty of other people just like him who enjoy owning and driving a piece of American history.
In 2010, he realized that he could quench his desire to drive as many American classics as he desired, as long as he could make room for them, so he ramped up car purchases. You can say it is no coincidence that the founder/owner of No Reserve Classics is named Joe, since he sells American classics that the “average Joe” can afford…but don’t get it twisted, there is nothing average about him or No Reserve Classics.
We enjoy what we do so much that the bottom dollar does not affect our decision making.
We choose to satisfy our passion for restoring classic cars by simply selling them to restore more American muscle.
— Joseph Hanna, Founder/Owner
Typically when you see classic cars, they’re either at car shows or have been sitting in the owner’s garage for quite some time not getting the attention they need. We take those cars and truly bring them back to life by fulfilling light restoration work and getting them to a so-called “turn-key” standpoint where you can hop in and reliably drive them every day.
When a vehicle is auctioned off, they all start at $0.01 and go to the highest bidder at the end of seven days…period. No Reserve Classics is an unprecedented and one of a kind online-based auction company that lets the market decide what our investment classic cars are worth. We are NOT run by used car salesmen and we are ALL passionate collectors who have years of experience owning and working on classic cars. We aim to make buying and selling your dream car as simple and as gratifying as possible.
