"1967 MG MGB GT MKI Coupe
A simple calculus has a long guided assessment of the MGB: chrome bumpers equals British classic; rubber bumpers equals British Leyland mediocrity. Yet this prejudice unfairly maligns thousands of cars and shortchanges the improbable 18 year run of the MGB. No one disputes the greatness of the early MGB, which debuted in 1962 as a replacement for the MGA. Handsomely styled, fun to drive, and relatively affordable, it quickly gained a wide following. Participation in racing burnished the car's reputation, and the introduction of the closed roof MGB GT in 1965 buoyed sales.
For consignment, a 1973 MG MGB GT MKI coupe showing 14,655 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. Exterior
Finished in iconic British Racing Green, the dark shade suits the little Brit quite as well as the name, covering the diminutive panels and intersected by a laser straight side trim piece that runs from the headlight ring to the edge of the tail light. The profile of the car shows the dramatic, swooping rear window and hatch along with the smaller back wheel openings, protruding rear quarter, and upright windshield. There's nothing quite shaped like a MGB GT and it's immediately recognizable, especially from behind where the large rear window takes up a good bit of real estate before the body concludes at the sculpted chrome bumper bolstered by bumper guards. 14-inch chrome wire wheels are the ideal complement, wrapped in 70 series tires before the idea of low profile entered our vernacular. Overall, the paint is very rough with fading, surface rust, blistering, crazing throughout, chipping, dents, checking, dings in the grille, scratches, and pitting.
Interior
Black dominates the interior and starts with a driver's door panel that shows some weathering and age with tears and ill fitting vinyl. The passenger side is in better shape and the bucket seats up front are in very good condition. The package shelf takes a smooth grain vinyl and surrounds it with white piping for a classic look. A nice 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheel presents to the driver leading to a simple dashboard with main dials fixed in a wood faceplate and polished rims. Toggles, switchgear and an AM/FM/Cassette radio occupy the center of the dash and the wonderfully oblong glovebox door contours to the curve of the arching dash pad. The shifter rises between the seats over black loop carpet and MG branded carpeted mats. The headliner shows some age and the hatch area is covered with a fitted carpet.
Drivetrain
Surrounded by patina and peeling paint is the 1798cc inline four cylinder rated at 95 horsepower and fueled with 2 HSU 1-barrel carburetors. It's mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and power is routed to the 3.909 gears in back. The engine itself presents cleanly in the bay.
Undercarriage
Plenty of patina underneath with a coating of surface rust on most surfaces but none of the invasive stuff. We note some residual fluid on the pan and rear differential. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and brakes are on board as front disc and rear drum. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
There is a method to getting in a car this low and small and by now, we've mastered it! And so we go, with the four cylinder singing, onto the test loop, checklist in hand, or at least on the passenger seat. These little Brits never cease to be fun cars and this one runs well. We note the tachometer, headlights and tail lights are not working, so for now, day trips only! All other functions operate as they should and you'll find this one in the British room! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This one comes with extra bucket seats, an additional hood and a left front fender! That's great news for this excellent candidate for restoration. Keep in British Racing Green or pick the color of your dreams! The sky's the limit with this hardtop coupe!
