This very rare fully restored 1967 Ford Fairlane 500 show condition is one of 72 R-codes ever produced powered by a 427ci 2x4 engine mated to a 4-speed transmission. This California delivered car has had a full rotisserie restoration on a beautiful Code I Ivy Gold Green metallic paint with Ivy gold cloth/vinyl bench seat interior. This spectral anomaly is popularly known as the R-code Fairlane, because the fifth spot in its VIN is an R, denoting the hot 427 between the shock towers. Specific springs, a mandatory Toploader four-speed, 11.375-inch front drum brakes, slower (manual) steering, specially built cast iron manifolds with transverse muffler dual exhaust system, (this car has been modified for with larger exhaust tubes and dual flow master mufflers) and an open 9-inch rear with 3.89 gears were among the mandatory R-code spiffs. Body sealer and “dum-dum” caulk were left off entirely. The result was a car that weighed just north of 3,300 pounds—despite all-steel bodywork and bumpers, bench seat, and proper glass all around the greenhouse. The heart of the R-code Fairlane was the legendary side-oiler 427, an upgrade from previous 427s that was packed with lessons learned during extreme conditions at Le Mans and elsewhere. Solid-lifter camshafts replaced hydraulic units. Forged cranks replaced cast pieces and rotated in a cradle of reinforced main-bearing webs and cross-bolted main bearing caps. The side-oiler name derived from the re-routed oiling system that included a cast-in oil gallery running down one side of the engine block, which was then drilled to provide oiling passages to the crankshaft’s main bearings as a priority, before sending lube up to the camshaft and valvetrain as in conventional FE engines (and nearly all other American V-8s of the time). This helped to keep the crank well lubricated even while whirring away at 103 rotations per second (or more) at racing speeds. The side oiler was said to be happy living at 6,200 rpm all day long, and safely capable of regular bursts north of seven grand when needed. Internationally, the side-oiler lived in Dan Gurney’s and A.J. Foyt’s ’67 Le Mans-winning Mk IV GT40; closer to home it also lived in more than a few Shelby Cobras. Compression ratios, cylinder heads, and intake and exhaust configurations differed between racing applications. (Under)rated at 425 horsepower, despite compression at a more street-friendly 10.5:1, Ford’s side-oiler 427 had as much power as the Hemi built by the cross-town competition at Chrysler and quickly became the stuff of legend. Legends often become legends because they are unobtainable to mortals of meager means. The $2,378.40 Fairlane suddenly became a $4,000 car; the “427-8V CID Engine Race Car Pkg.” cost a then-monstrous $1,725.20. You’d never know it by looking at it, of course, since this strippo-spec Fairlane was about the most anonymous package you’d find. In these modern days of alloy wheels, mile-wide tires, bright colors, and endless comfort and convenience options, dressing a Fairlane to look like the six-cylinder sloth that Aunt Tillie takes to church feels counterintuitive. This car is the definition of a "sleeper". Russ Davis Ford in Covina, California sold this on 7/07/67. This was very late in the model year, and this may be one of the last 427 Fairlanes sold! What began as a used car store in the 1970’s soon blossomed into one of the premier classic car dealerships in the country with a showroom boasting more than 25,000 square feet. During that time, celebrities, professional athletes, movie stars and prominent businessmen were highlighting the Duffy’s satisfied customer list. That company, founded on solid Midwest values and work ethic, would become the model for what all future classic and specialty car dealerships would emulate. The “new” Duffy’s is now home to more than 60 vehicles in the same glorious showroom that brought them prominence from the 1980’s through the early 21st century. A full service automotive and detailing department meticulously tends to each vehicle ensuring a fun, sound investment opportunity for its owner.
Turn the clock to today a resurgence of that historic Duffy’s brand. Classic Enterprises that became a descendant business, realized the value of the original Duffy’s recognition and reputation. When the old name became available we jumped on it. The name, the logo and the commitment to excellence have now been resurrected and have replaced the Classic Enterprises moniker. In addition, two of the “old school” members of the original Duffy’s management team are leading the company transition along with a full sales and service staff.
While the definition of a “classic” vehicle may have changed over the years that same,” Old School” Duffy’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has not.
