"1966 Ford Mustang GT Hardtop
""If you thought we couldn't improve on a winner, try Mustang '66! For '66, we did the nicest thing we could think of, we changed the Mustang very carefully. There's smart new ornamentation all around. Also new, (and standard), are a 5 dial instrument cluster, 14-inch low profile tires and full wheel covers. But the standard features that give the Mustang so much of its potent charm are all here. Just mention Mustang and you've set off a lively conversation. All about fun, excitement, going places, doing things. Proof? Over 418,000 on the road in Mustang's first year, an all time record!"" From the 1966 brochure.
For consignment, a 1966 Ford Mustang GT hardtop showing 75,304 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. This is a true A-code car coming to you with receipts from recent restoration work that included some fuel system, brakes, steering and suspension work. This dream ride is buttoned up and ready to roll!
Exterior
Two stage Springtime Yellow covers this car like a vat of French vanilla cream and is accented by the GT black rocker stripe that frames the Mustang emblem on the front quarter, just under the GT badge. In front, inboard fog lights connect to the horse corral via a GT chrome bar and are bisected by a horizontal trim piece of their own, while up top, the black vinyl roof creates a complementary contrast and is in excellent condition. Dual exhaust gets a gilded exit via chrome rings of the valance in a spectacular feature that is accentuated by the round reverse lights on the same panel. 14-inch Styled Steel wheels hold 185/75R14's with an early 2022 date code. Imperfections are few and include cracking paint at a door gap and on the rocker panel. The rest is in fantastic shape.
Interior
Super fine black door panels include a column stitched insert, contoured armrest, and glossy black framing while a pistol grip door release handles are present as part of the luxury interior package. Low back black vinyl bucket seats are adorned with embossed horses on the upper and that carries over the back bench and the driver's seat shows wear with significant rips. The wood rimmed steering wheel has a few cracks and wears sporty spokes that leads to the instrument cluster where woodgrain backing is also a luxury interior feature and it surrounds the Rally Pack gauge cluster including a tachometer and clock flanking the embedded speedometer and smaller system gauges, all showing some patina. An updated AM/FM/Cassette radio lives above the woodgrain center console where the T-handle shifter resides over black loop carpet and Mustang branded rubber mats. Our trunk shows some use on its vinyl mat and a spare tire is present.
Drivetrain
The engine bay holds a 289ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and horsepower rating of 225. It's generally clean but a little elbow grease with a toothbrush and Simple Green will go far to shine it up! Meanwhile, it's mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the Ford 8"" in back with 3.00 gears. Power steering is on board, and all components were rebuilt during the 2024 restoration.
Undercarriage
We find generally clean conditions underneath with your typical surface rust and oxidation and the beginning of invasive rust on the one rear unibody rail. The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers on its way to the epic exit out back and brakes are configured as front disc and rear drum and all components, including lines, have been overhauled. Suspension includes coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
We have no qualms about testing this well sorted '66 and it has no problem passing our simple array of functional assessments. It runs well, stops well, and with fresher tires and overhauled steering, handles like a champ. We find the clock and heater blower not working but all other functions work as they should and we steer this desirable GT back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Get in line, in fact get to the head of the line. There is no doubt that classic Mustangs are a top seller at Classic Auto Mall and this one represents an incredible opportunity to purchase a true GT. Seriously, don't sleep on this too many nights, because it won't be here long. Our job is to make this car visible to the world, so you're competing with roughly 8 billion people. Are you dialing yet?
