"1966 Ford Mustang Convertible
""When the average person thinks about a classic Mustang, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is a cherry red 66 Mustang hardtop. The 1966 Mustangs were a smash! Ford sold over 600,000 of these, making it nearly twice as popular as its competitor that year, the Chevrolet Impala. In fact, it was the best selling Mustang of all time!""classicmustang.com
For consignment, a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible showing 80,358 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has all the exterior cues of a GT, restored in the 90's, and purchased by our consignor in 1998 who has kept it in the garage all that time, but not before enjoying many long drives. This capable Mustang's restoration has held up very well and represents essentially a turnkey opportunity.
Exterior
It was white at birth and continues to wear a clean. A white exterior accented with blue GT rocker stripes, a blue canvas convertible top, inboard fog lights set in the grille, GT emblems on the side, and exhaust exiting through the rear valance with trumpet tipped exhaust. A luggage rack is secured to the decklid and the car is equipped with a trailer hitch under the license plate. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels add even more sportiness to the pony car and carry 205/70R14's all the way around. All of the metal work is in very nice shape, as is the convertible top including the plastic window which still presents clear.
Interior
White vinyl inserts are enveloped in blue painted borders on the door panels and are in nice condition. This car has the ""Luxury"" interior option which includes pistol grip handles and red and white courtesy light on the doors. The two colors also contrast on the vinyl seats where white stitched inserts are inside blue sides and under the embossed herd of horses on the seat backs, another Luxury item. We note some compression of the front seats but both front and rear are clean and fully intact. Up front, Luxury package woodgrain first makes an appearance on the beautiful wood rimmed steering wheel which leads to an instrument cluster with woodgrain bezel between the blue dash pad and white mid dash, an attractive combination. A rallye pack holding the tachometer and a clock is perched on the steering column and an updated AM/FM/Cassette radio is in the middle and A/C is on board mounted below the dash. The familiar T-handle shifter is floor mounted, surrounded by light blue loop carpet and vintage style Mustang rubber mats, in blue of course. The trunk is finished with a vinyl plaid mat and matching material covers the spare tire for a clean presentation.
Drivetrain
Open the hood to find a clean 289ci V8 with a Carter 4-barrel carburetor on top, Cobra valve covers, and a GT350 style stabilizer bridging the bay. It is mated to a C4 3-speed automatic sending power to the Ford 8"" in back with 2.80 gearing. Disc brakes are employed up front with drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Our consignor states, this car is a driver and indeed, the underside is clean, driver quality with some typical surface rust on things like the leaf springs and exhaust, but minimal oil is present save for a few drops of the red stuff on the transmission. Dual exhaust connects with an H-pipe and then runs in tandem to meet stock style mufflers before finding their way through the apron panel in back. Suspension is configured as coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
This attractive car doesn't disappoint on the test loop run where the 289 deliver good power and the car does all things well, runs, handles, and stops, all up to par. We note the speedometer and odometer are non functional, but all other operational items work as they should on this well maintained car. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here we have a convertible classic Mustang with the attractive Luxury or ""Pony"" interior along with some cosmetic upgrades over the average '66 Mustang. Summer's here and the time is right, for prancing in the street. Tou'll need a Mustang to get it done so if there's always been a first gen Ford Mustang on your wishlist, take a look at this blue and white beauty.
