"1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
""In the 1966 Ford, quiet speaks for quality, deep through quality that is most obvious in Ford's famous ride. Smooth, soft, gently controlled, marvelously quiet. Solid Ford engineering advances make ride news again for 1966. The '66 Fords bring you new styling with the look of quiet elegance. New interior richness. Features newer than any you've known in any automobile before."" Upbeat marketing from Ford's '66 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible with a title verified 39,605 actual miles. This car presents in unrestored and mostly original condition which would absolutely stand out in a show full over the top restorations. It's fantastic just the way it is!
Exterior
In what some feel is the best color for a Galaxie, single stage Rangoon Red coats the long panels and horizontal surfaces of this car and other than a call out and some accenting near the fuel door, the side is a virtual billboard of red, underscored by the ribbed rocker panel trim below. Up front, stacked headlights are accompanied by marker dual marker lights and a twin grille detail to match, while in back, Ford opts for the square tail lights with crosshair detail and reverse light in the center. The straight bumper is parallel with the Ford branded light panel, completing the linear and boxy look so prevalent in the 60's. Our black canvas top is in good shape and proper wheel covers dress up the 15-inch wheels. Imperfections include some edge fraying on the top, scuffs and haziness to the rear window, various chips and touch ups throughout, one with a ding, some metal pitting, a missing, some rust on the bottoms of the doors, a few dings and scuffs in that rocker trim, and evidence of filler in several places.
Interior
The palette of black begins on the door panels that combine a grid pattern and smooth vinyl along with polished trim lines, and both doors are in good condition. The split bench is also nice and wears a stamped floral design on the uppers, repeated in the back bench that is consistent with overall condition. A horn ring brightens the black steering wheel which leads to a horizontal speedometer next to the embedded AM radio over a mid panel that's dolled up with some woodgrain applique and housing horizontal levers for wipers and vents. The ribbed pattern of the rocker trim is mimicked on the lower trim that spans the width of the dash in a fantastic representation of 60's style. A few minor nicks on the otherwise clean dash pad catch our attention but the black loop carpet below is nice. The trunk is barren and covered with a period plaid vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood you'll find a 289ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor rated at 200 horsepower backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to Ford 9"" in back. The car is equipped with power steering and the bay presents as original with the engine dressed in Ford Blue.
Undercarriage
Clean driver quality conditions prevail underneath where a single exhaust runs through a stainless steel muffler on its way to an unceremonious exit. Drum brakes are on all four wheels and suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 3 link and panhard bar in back.
Drive-Ability
We hopped into this full sized Ford and peered out over the long red hood, cranked the 289 and off we went, around the test loop for a functionality exam. The car runs well and has decent power although we're not flogging it as the meats are nearly 20 years old. Of note is the radio and reverse lights which are not working and the shifter indicator doesn't line up with what actual gear you're in. Beyond that, all functions work as they should and we roll this survivor back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
