When Chevrolet introduced the Impala in 1958 as the Bel Air's flagship trim, no one at General Motors could have anticipated how completely it would come to define American automotive culture. Spun off as its own model line in 1959, the Impala grew into Chevrolet's best-selling nameplate through the early 1960s - and by the middle of the decade, it was the best-selling car in the United States. The 1965 model year brought a sweeping redesign that set the template for the generation, and the 1966 Chevrolet Impala carried that new look forward with a series of refined, purposeful updates. At the front, the fenders were raked forward for a more aggressive stance, and the dual headlight assemblies received bright anodized bezels flanking a matching anodized grille - a crisper, more polished face than the year before.
