The original 1963 Corvette Grand Sport remains one of Chevrolets most recognizable competition cars, and this Mid America Industries Grand Sport II was professionally constructed to capture its unmistakable wide body character while incorporating substantially more modern performance and road going capability.
This car is accompanied by an impressive collection of original Mid America Industries documentation. Its Grand Sport II Assembly Agreement, signed by Mid America Industries President Jeffrey J. Leech, dates to December 9, 1998. Additional correspondence from Mid America specifically identifies the car by 1966 Corvette VIN 194376S120533, providing valuable documentation of its construction and provenance.
The Grand Sport II was constructed using a genuine 1966 Corvette Sting Ray coupe donor, retaining its Corvette VIN and portions of the original passenger compartment structure. Mid America combined the foundation with its purpose built Grand Sport II tubular chassis and C4 Corvette derived suspension, creating a professionally engineered build rather than a conventional fiberglass bodied kit.
Power comes from a Corvette LS1 V8, a drivetrain choice specifically confirmed by the accompanying Mid America documentation. The fuel injected LS1 features ported and polished cylinder heads, an aftermarket intake, custom air intake, and polished aluminum components. It is paired with a 4L60E four speed electronic automatic transmission, also documented by Mid America, sending power to a Dana 44 rear differential.
The chassis incorporates C4 Corvette derived independent suspension at both ends, adjustable front coilover shocks, a transverse composite rear spring, and rack and pinion steering. The substantial tubular chassis and more contemporary suspension provide a combination designed for considerably more modern road manners while retaining the character and proportions of the Grand Sport inspired body.
Finished in Admiral Blue, the dramatically flared body is accented by a broad white center stripe with red detailing. White side exit exhaust with integrated glasspacks, functional rear brake cooling scoops, and Halibrand style knockoff wheels reinforce the competition inspired appearance. Staggered Nitto NT555 performance tires measure 275/40ZR17 in front and 315/35ZR17 at the rear.
The interior takes a street oriented approach to the Grand Sport theme. Black and blue Procar bucket seats are accompanied by Auto Meter Phantom style instrumentation, a B&M ratchet shifter, and a tilt steering column. Vintage Air heating and air conditioning, an AM/FM/Bluetooth/GPS head unit, and a rearview camera add useful modern conveniences. The glove box door also bears a Dave Kindig signature.
Additional equipment includes LED exterior lighting, selectable blue halo headlights, a high flow Griffin radiator with electric cooling fan, braided wiring and plumbing details, and a finished and accessible rear luggage compartment.
Extensive original Mid America Industries paperwork accompanies the car, including its Grand Sport II Assembly Agreement and subsequent correspondence signed by company president Jeffrey J. Leech. The documentation identifies the Corvette by VIN and confirms both its Mid America construction and LS1/4L60E drivetrain combination.
Showing 10,812 indicated miles, this Grand Sport II combines documented Mid America Industries provenance, a genuine 1966 Corvette donor, purpose built tubular chassis, C4 independent suspension, and Corvette LS1 power. Its surviving original build documentation further distinguishes it from the many undocumented Grand Sport replicas and tributes built over the years and provides a clear connection to the company responsible for its construction.
