"By 1966, Cadillac had truly established itself as The Standard of the World and produced some of its most luxurious and desirable vehicles.
This example was made in Cadillac's Detroit, Michigan assembly plant. Dressed in Mist Blue (code 20) with an Ivory power-folding canvas top that looks great with a tempered glass backlight and matching boot or tonneau. The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, the bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is extremely tidy. This is one of 19,200 convertible DeVilles made in 1966 and left the factory with the following options Soft-Ray glass (code E), six-way power seats (code Y) and automatic climate control (code K).
This car rolls on 235/75R15 blackwall radials mounted on American Racing 50th Anniversary aluminum wheels. The tires and wheels are all in very good condition. This car rides on a 129.5-inch wheelbase.
Under the big, counterbalanced hood is a rebuilt 429 CID V-8 engine. Backing this motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.21:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power recirculating-ball steering, power brakes, power windows and a power front bench seat. The air-conditioning is currently inoperable.
Recent maintenance work includes front disc brakes and master cylinder work, newer exhaust, new tires, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, a rebuilt driveshaft and many more small items as well.
Inside, the sumptuous black leather interior (code 351) is in overall excellent order, as is the matching carpet. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. The inner door panels and dashboard are in excellent order. There's a dual cupholder setup next to the front seat. A column-mounted shift lever, a modern AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth and an aftermarket oil pressure gauge mounted under the dashboard complete the interior.
In 1966, model year changes included a somewhat coarser mesh for the radiator grille insert, which was now divided by a thick, bright metal horizontal center bar housing rectangular parking lamps at the outer ends. Separate rectangular cornering lamps replaced the integral grille extension designs. There was generally less chrome on all Cadillac models this year. De Ville scripts were still above the rear tip of the horizontal body rub moldings. Cadillac crests and V-shaped moldings, front and rear, were identifiers. Cadillac ""firsts"" this season included variable ratio steering and optional front seats with carbon cloth heating pads built into the cushions and seatbacks. Comfort and convenience innovations were headrests, reclining seats and an AM/FM stereo system. Automatic level control was available. Engineering improvements made to the perimeter frame increased ride and handling ease. Newly designed piston and oil rings and a new engine mounting system and patented quiet exhaust were used.
A binder of receipts tells a story of how well this Cadillac was loved and cared for.
Convertible competition to this DeVille in 1966 included Buick's Electra, Cadillac's own Eldorado and Fleetwood, Chrysler's 300, Dodge's Polara 500, Imperial's Crown, Lincoln's Continental, Mercury's Park Lane, plus Oldsmobile's 98 and Pontiac's Bonneville.
This long, wide and low droptop is sure to attract attention wherever it goes. The combination of blue exterior and black interior blends well and looks great. If you're a Cadillac fan, a convertible connoisseur or you're just looking for a big, comfy cruiser, this '66 DeVille may be the candidate car for you.
