If you're tired of running with the herd, switch to Coronet for 1965. The car that puts excitement back in driving without bending your budget."" From the 1965 sale brochure.
For consignment, a 1965 Dodge Coronet 440 convertible with a title verified 90,323 actual miles. This one sports a rebuilt 383ci V8 with stout components and an SSBC power brake kit with front discs along with numerous other improvements.
Exterior
As we entered a new millennium, this car got a new paint job, now appearing in brilliant two stage Ruby Red Metallic with a distinctive side trim piece that sandwiches white between bands of stainless. There's ornamental trim on the decklid as well which carries a Dodge call out in period font in a straightedge frame of aluminum. Let's stay in back where vertical tail lights follow a contour up and over the decklid in a rarely seen configuration. Up front, dual headlights are set in a continuous row of vertical ribs that make up the grille and marker lights are embedded in the straight, chrome bumper below. 15-inch Polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are the perfect exclamation point and are wrapped in tires with a late 2019 date code. Up top, a white canvas soft top protects from the elements with some slight discoloration and a hazy rear window. Other imperfections include some light crazing, general inclusions, surface scratches, a ding and discoloration on rear trim panel, light pitting on some of the metalwork, chips, bubbles, surface rust at wheel opening, clear/paint runs, and a gap issue at driver's door.
Interior
Dramatic door panels sandwich a band of white vinyl between stitch pleated Dark Ruby Red sections, with a red armrest propped in the center and the window crank nearby and both present in good condition. The seats also combine red grain vinyl with white inserts with a split bench up front and full bench in back, both showing in great shape. A full horn ring resides inside the steering wheel ahead of a dash and dash pad that were both refurbished about 25 years ago. The horizontal speedometer and gauges live in an aluminum faceplate that spans the width taking in an AM/FM/Bluetooth radio along the way while a triple pack gauge pod lives below. The red carpet shows a touch of age and the trunk presents as original with a plaid vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
Our consignor states there are less than 2,000 miles on the 383ci V8 under the hood, rebuilt in 2021 and having a Melling 23204 camshaft, Pertronix II ignition, 906 casting heads, and Edelbrock AVS2 650cfm 4-barrel carburetor, and Mopar HP exhaust manifolds. It's mated to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear 8 ¾ inch acle with 3.23 gears. The bay and engine are clean and the car has power brakes and power steering.
Undercarriage
We find clean conditions underneath where the fresh looking dual exhaust includes an H-pipe, Dynomax mufflers, and TTI 2.5 inch stainless exhaust. The front brakes are now power discs and the rear has power drums. Suspension includes torsion bars up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The car emits a sweet exhaust note upon start up and the engine provides obvious power underfoot as we roll this attractive red Mopar on to the test loop. It tracks straight, handles well, and stopping is superior. The cherry on top is that all functions, including the power top, operate as intended! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Less than 90,000 Coronet 440's were produced in 1965 which might explain why we simply don't see many here at the mall. This is a well sorted and distinctive Dodge, clean inside and out, and rocking a fantastic drivetrain and exhaust. Put Classic Auto Mall on speed dial and get in on this one!
