"1965 Cushman Super Silver Eagle
""Cushman Motor Works of Omaha, Nebraska, established its reputation by building motor scooters such as its famous Auto-Glide model. In 1949, Cushman redesigned its 50 series scooter to look like a miniature version of a Harley-Davidson Big Twin or an Indian Chief. The newly named Cushman Eagle motorcycle became the firm's best seller. In 1961, Cushman unveiled its all new, all aluminum OMC 9 hp Super Husky engine to create the Silver Eagle."" For consignment, a 1965 Cushman Super Silver Eagle with a title verified 4,085 actual miles. This one's fresh from a complete restoration and represents an uncommon, final production year model.
Exterior
With small wheels and a good sized engine, it really does blur the line between scooter and motorcycle and occupies a unique niche among two wheelers. It's both tough looking and whimsical at the same time and that's the overall appeal. This one is finished in two stage Maroon paint that covers the sizable rear bodywork, the front apron, fender, and of course, the teardrop gas tank. There's lots of chrome accenting and componentry and the CM logo is emblazoned on every side except the back. Here, a single tail light hovers over a robust license plate box framed in chrome. A white vinyl front saddle is matched by the rear ""buddy seat"" and both have red piping and present in very nice condition. There's more white below on the 9.75-inch white wall tires.
Functionality
A windshield is provided up front to block the wind which might be as high as 50 mph which you'll be able to determine from the speedometer housed in a chrome panel that shows some light pitting. White rubber handles cap the handle bars with limited controls and brakes on the left side and throttle on the right. A gear selector emerges on the left side, now topped with a red marble knob. The bike has electric start but can be kick started optionally.
Drivetrain
On board is the 354cc OMC Super Husky 4 stroke one cylinder engine capable of nine horsepower, receiving fuel through a 1-barrel carburetor and driven through a 2-speed manual that routes power through a chain drive to the rear wheel. The single exhaust is artfully displayed with a straight pipe on the side, terminating in a contoured panel next to the tail light. Suspension consists of a telescopic fork in front and rigid design in back while drum brakes are employed at both wheels.
Legend has it that a club called The Mods were known to ride Cushmans in the 1960's, but you'll be hard pressed to find a Cushman with a lot of miles. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find nice ones for sale, and this piece of pure Americana will look great in your collection or on display in your living room!
