"1964 Triumph TR4 Roadster
""The success of the TR2 and TR3 models in the mid and late 1950's made the Triumph Roadsters,(TR), a viable product on the world's stage. By the end of the 1950's the Standard Triumph Motor Company was looking to the future with confidence in themselves and in the sports car market. Triumph, in 1961, began their transition to the six cylinder sports cars of later TR design – the TR250, TR5, and TR6."" Thx vintagetriumphregister.org
For consignment, a 1964 Triumph TR4 showing 75,791 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. The Vintage Triumph Register continues, ""The TR4 has been called a transition between the TR2/3 and the TR6, but many auto critics of the time and most TR4 owners consider the TR4 a winner in its own right.""
Exterior
You can't go wrong with a coat of British Racing Green on this English sports car, in this case, presenting in two stage application. Designed by famed Italian designer Michelotti, the car is wider and lower than previous generations with a chrome bumper that spans the width and wears bumper guards, just below the grille and round headlights over which the hood is sculpted. More curves are found in the hood in the asymmetrical bump, created to make room for carburetion and looking oh so cool between the raised fenders. A straight shoulder line gives this car a stable and strong stance, its tail ending in a sharp vertical angle and upright tail lights over a wrap-around bumper. 15-inch wire wheels wear 80 series tires with a mid 2020 date code. Imperfections include a gap issue on the hood, scratches, chips, a ding on the hood, lots of orange peel finish, and general inclusions.
Interior
Black vinyl door cards hold metal hardware and a map pocket along with some design lines, and are in good condition. Low back bucket seats also look great in black with white piping all around, and the stitch pattern is mirrored by the cargo area side wall cover. The top frame is behind the seats and there is a new soft top included with the car. There is a black roll bar over the seat while up front, a banjo style steering wheel promises fun on the open air road. The dash is body colored with a central black gauge panel and it's all in nice shape whereas the knobs and buttons below show a touch of patina and includes an AM radio. A chrome knobbed shifter is in place, emerging from a rubber boot over black carpet. The trunk, or boot, presents cleanly and finished with carpet and vinyl panels.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, or bonnet, is a 2138cc four cylinder rated at 105 horsepower and fueled through 2 Su carburetors. The 4-speed manual transmission has desirable overdrive and routes power to 4.10 gears in back.
Undercarriage
There's typical surface rust and patina, which makes the stainless steel exhaust system shine bright, and it includes a muffler and resonator. In front, you'll find disc brakes and in back, drums. Suspension consists of coil springs ahead and leaf springs behind.
Drive-Ability
Cutting through the open air in this square shouldered Brit is quite fun and the car functions well. In fact, all operating items on the car work as they should except the radio. It's light, low and nimble which is why British roadsters have been thrilling people for more than 80 years. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A vintage British sports car you can drive! After all, they were made to be driven and this one is an inviting little package. Get ready for thumbs up everywhere and the inevitable gas station conversations. Allow extra time no matter where you are going!
