""The Silver Cloud III series was the last of the popular Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud series. The Silver Cloud I and II, (and Bentley S1 and S2), from 1955 to 1961, shared the same standard body, but when the SCIII was introduced in 1962, contemporary trends modified the design. The Silver Cloud models signaled the end of the coachbuilt period, as Rolls-Royce found it could sell 10 times as many cars with ""standard steel bodies."" Custom Rolls-Royces were occasionally built after 1970, but by then the company had predominantly taken the path it is following today."" Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Saloon showing 8,247 miles but true miles are unknown due to PA title exemption. This automobile was subject to an extensive restoration and comes to its new owner with receipts of recent work done.
Exterior
It's going to be hard not to overuse the word ""iconic"" here, but the graceful and stately flowing shape of the Silver Cloud is just that, and the often imitated, never duplicated grille is the standard-bearer for opulence and class. The two stage Masons Black paint is as fitting here as it is on grand piano, intersected by a gold pinstripe and polished trim piece that rides the waistline and simultaneously masks the door handles. The enormous, rounded decklid is impressive, but it's the front of the car that is the start with its dual headlights in chrome housing, the tall grille with branded crown and of course, the Spirit of Ecstasy perched high and proud. Fog lights ride on the chrome bumper while the clear marker lights cap the ends of the rounded fenders. 15-inch wheels wear the proper covers and are wrapped in 75 series tires with a late 2022 date code. Overall, the body and paint are excellent. Imperfections include light surface scratches, light crazing on the roof and elsewhere, chipped paint on the door, some blistering below the window guide of a door and on the rocker panel, underpaint, and a few random chips.
Interior
Setting the standards for interiors also, the Rolls starts with leather clad door panels with burl walnut crowns and all doors present nicely with some slight wear on the driver's including some light crazing to the urethane. Inside, the beige leather also covers the seats, wide buckets up front and a full bench in back, thickly padded and showing in nice shape with some slight compression on the driver's side. Rear passengers are afforded an armrest along with a wooden tray and ashtray ahead. In front, a standard steering wheel fronts the fully wooden dash with the instrument panel towards the center along with an array of switchgear and an AM/FM/Cassette radio. Thick beige carpet is at our feet and a clean headliner is above while the trunk is lined with a black carpet piece.
Drivetrain
The car is equipped with a 6.2 liter V8 rated at 220 horsepower and fueled via two Su carburetors. It's mated to a Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear axle and 3.42 gears. Power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning are on board.
Undercarriage
We have driver quality conditions underneath with some typical patina, surface rust, and flaking rust noted on a belly pan and body brace. A single, stainless steel exhaust system runs through a stock style stainless muffler and resonator before exiting through a straight pipe in back. Servo assisted power drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
We slow roll this lovely Brit on to the test loop, not missing an opportunity to be seen by all! It's a hard car to miss, but an easy car to drive as it delivers a smooth and quiet ride in a thoroughly comfortable cabin. We follow the Spirit and point her in the direction we want the big front end to go, and it's as simple as that! The horn is not working and the right rear window works intermittently, but all other functions operate as intended on the grand automobile. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
