"1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL Convertible
For those of you who used their formative years to educate and mostly entertain themselves with the boob tube, you were probably catching an episode or two of Andy of Mayberry. A number of awesome cars were featured in the Andy Griffith Show over its nine year run, but Griffith's squad cars were always Ford Galaxie 500 sedans. Fords were increasingly featured as the show reached its later years, undoubtedly because of a sponsorship from the Ford Motor Company.
For consignment, a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible with a title verified 97,811 actual miles. For those who desired a less flashy, perhaps more family friendly version of the Thunderbird, this was the ticket. Today, a topless beauty like this one will likely cause more rubbernecking than any comparable Thunderbird on the street.
Exterior
As we leave the 50's, big, polished ornate trim begins to phase out, but remnants remain like the dramatic side trim of the Galaxie, which starts as a broad band and shrinks to a narrow trim piece, ending as a spear but not without including a tri colored starburst in the back. It all contrasts beautifully with Rangoon Red paint, here in two stage application, stunningly bright and accented by the white canvas soft top. Between the Thunderbird tail lights is a trim panel and the tail is encircled in polished parts that include the contouring bumper. Up front, the grille undulates with vertical strakes between quad headlights that protrude beyond the grille, underscored by a nice chrome bumper that houses the marker lights. 14-inch wheels have proper covers and are mounted with 215/75R14 tires with a mid 2023 date code. In general, the paint and metal are very nice on the car. Imperfections include some bubbling down low, a spider crack in the paint, and some scuffs including along the rocker panel.
Interior
With a swing of either of the 2 doors greet us with clean red vinyl, carpeted door panels, aluminum inserts, and a dual courtesy light. The red bucket seats up front combine center stitched tuck and roll inserts with smooth vinyl border delineated with silver piping, a sporty look that is clean and exciting. The defined dual seat in the back shares the design and all seats are in great shape. Our red steering wheel has an ornamental and functional horn ring that leads to a dash dominated by red, symmetrically configured, and underscored by an aluminum backed mid panel that house all of the knobs, levers, and switches, along with the AM/FM radio and old school clock. A SelectAire unit resides under the dash just ahead of the striated metallic center console where the shifter is poised for action. Red loop carpet floods the floors protected by vintage white mats and the trunk floor is also protected by a fitted mat and here we find fender skirts, convertible tonneau, and a spare tire, all in nice shape.
Drivetrain
Clean and original looking, the bay houses a 390ci V8 rated at a respectable 300 horsepower. A 4-barrel carburetor distributes the go juice and a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic sets the car in motion by routing power to the Ford 9"" in back with 3.00 gearing. Power drum brakes are supplied to each wheel.
Undercarriage
Clean driver quality conditions prevail underneath with some typical surface rust, a drop or two of oil up front, some normal patina, and some oil at the rear differential, possibly emanating from the pinion seal. Power steering is noted along with coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back. Dual exhaust includes FlowMaster mufflers and exits under the car discreetly and without fanfare.
Drive-Ability
We take our seat on the cool buckets up front, turn the key, and fire up the 390 for adventure. Out to the test loop we go with this classic red flyer, and take note of its impressive power, straight tracking, and decent handling. We ride with the top off and the plastic window is clear making visibility ideal. Our notes also reflect that all functional items on the car, simple as they may be, operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is an attractive and well sorted cruiser that will definitely get some attention, especially when you drop the top and let it all hang out. Clean lines, exciting trim, and a spotless interior are ingredients that would make a tasty cake, in this case, a red velvet one. Grab yourself a slice of this classic before it's gone.
