"1964 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
""Top down for taking in the sun or top up for taking in the weather, the '64 Sting Ray convertible promises great times and sparkling performance. With things like Ball-Race steering and a power team from a quartet of restless V8's and versatile transmissions, a Corvette delivers what it promises. Both the sport coupe and convertible feature better than ever ride qualities, higher horsepower ratings for the two top engines, refined styling and interior comfort."" Corvettemuseum..org
For consignment, a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing 40,843 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one sports its numbers matching 327 and has been owned by our consignor for 20 years, using it only for shows, parades, and ice cream runs and never in rain!
Exterior
One of seven colors available in 1964, Riverside Red, here in two stage application, was named for the California Raceway where professionals and amateurs cut their teeth beginning in the late 50's. The red smooths the lines of the cars including the crease in each fender and the horizontal twin fender vents that are holdovers from the '63 and in their final year. A gentle crease runs the center of the decklid and onto the cowl cover for the soft top, while exhaust tips protrude through the body panel beneath the chrome bumper with bezels of their own. The hood vents are gone from 1963, but the torpedo shaped detail puts the ""sting"" in Sting Ray, coming to a point just past the hood gap. 15-inch knock off wheels are the perfect fit here wrapped in even 205/70R15s all around. The black canvas top and its window, the paint, and metalwork are all in great shape and the only imperfections we find are a couple of paint chips.
Interior
Swing open the doors to reveal a vertical pattern in black vinyl split by a chrome trim piece, then a smooth bottom panel. All the black is offset by chrome window cranks, sliding knob for a door actuator, and two jet age reflectors and both doors present cleanly. Black vinyl low back buckets are in great shape and flank a center armrest which sits behind a chrome edged center console which houses a chrome shifter. The console then climbs straight up to house a sideways mounted AM/FM radio, various knobs and pulls and large chrome bezel black faced clock. In front of the driver and passenger are graceful cowls, one over the glovebox, and the other for the gauge cluster complete with red needles that contour inside the concave dials. The glovebox has a brushed aluminum finish and the faux wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel has a crossed flag center badge and shows some age cracks. Black carpet in the wheel wells is decent and continues to the cargo area.
Drivetrain
Clean, driver quality conditions prevail under the hood where the numbers matching 327ci L75 V8 resides, topped by a newer 4-barrel carburetor and backed by a 1964/65 Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. This package is rated at 300 horsepower and that power is routed to the rear axle with 3.08 gears and Positraction. Drum brakes are found at each of the four wheels. The bay is clean enough to be show worthy, but a toothbrush and some Simple Green could take it to the next level! Meanwhile, a new clutch, radiator, front brakes, and power steering have been added. The original AFB carburetor comes with the car.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with surface rust reserved for some bolts and only a drop of oil on the pan. Dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers just before exiting through chrome tips in the rear valance. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and the rear has a frame anchored three link system with transverse strut rods and leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
We take our turn at bat and hit a home run with this beautiful '64 Vette. The engine not only sounds good, but delivers a powerful ride in a well balanced car and ever improving interior. We note that the very cool sideways mounted radio is not working, and the reverse lights are not illuminating, but all other functions on classic, including the hidden headlights, operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Three things are certain. Death, taxes, and '64 Corvettes selling fast at Classic Auto Mall! Between 1963 and 1964, Riverside Red was the most common color because it was the most desired color. You can't argue with the market which still remains enthusiastic about classic C2 Corvettes in red. It's almost as iconic as the red stripes on the American Flag and a must have in any legitimate Corvette collection. New to the classic world? Might as well jump in the deep end with this incredible car.
