"1963 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop
The name 'Impala' comes from the Zulu language meaning 'gazelle'. Aptly named, the Chevrolet version introduced in 1958, continued to emulate its animal namesake through years of design modifications, and power options made available. In 1963, the jet age was in full swing, and automobile designers were transitioning from nonfunctional visual embellishments, to sleek, cleaner line designs for their cars. Engineers also caught on that more power will attract more buyers, and the ""race"" was on!
For consignment, a 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS hardtop showing 267 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Family owned since 2015, this red SS has a period correct 283ci V8 and present in very nice, mostly original condition, a true 3Z SS car!
Exterior
Eye catching and two stage Riverside Red, no doubt named for the racetrack, is the color of choice and turns a rather conservative shape into something to take note of. From its chromed bezel dual headlights flanking an egg crate grille, and lower wrap around bumper, beautiful belt line trim spear that runs the length of the body and the dual sets of three tail lights within more spun aluminum trim, a chrome surround, and lower bumper, this car sports plenty of nice brightwork and chrome to feast your eyes on. Polished window trim, ""Impala SS"" badging with the galloping impala in a circle, and the crossed flags badge on both front quarter panels shine brightly against its red paint. Stylish and sporty wheel covers dress up the 14-inch wheels and white stripe tires were the choice of the times. Imperfections include bubbling and rust spots on lower panels, evidence of filler, different shades of red patches, and rust in the drip rail.
Interior
A swing of the door and we see some classic 60's touches with grain vinyl decorated with grommets and carpeted lowers on the door panels. As we move inside two original looking wide buckets in red vinyl, showing some patina and a few tears, contrasted by the chrome frame. The rear bench presents cleanly. A shiny red steering wheel with horn ring is offered to the driver who has a view of the red dash, horizontal gauges, tach on the column, and spun aluminum mid panel with switchgear and an AM/FM radio. A similar design back the triple VDO gauge pod that's been added under the dash, but your eyes will be drawn to the center console that is offset for the driver, the white ball shifter in a chrome base accented with more spun aluminum over red loops carpet and SS mats that have absorbed usage. The white headliner above is nice as is the trunk, which is clean and barren.
Drivetrain
The bay is clean and houses a 283ci V8 rated at 195 horsepower and fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor. A Powerglide 2-speed automatic backs it up and sends power to the rear axle with 3.08 gears. We note the presence of air conditioning and a polished alternator, along with chrome valve covers and air filter casing.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with the exception of some road spray and oil on the pan which has drifted back to mark the flywheel cover and exhaust components. That exhaust is a dual system that flows through Thrush mufflers before finding an exit via chrome tips. Power drum brakes are supplied to all four wheels and suspension is configured as coil springs up front and a 3 link, coil springs, and a panhard bar out back.
Drive-Ability
It's a step back into time, back to 1963 as we take a seat on the flat bucket, pump the gas, and crank the V8 to life, the Thrush mufflers doing their job to retain a sweet exhaust note as we move the race inspired shifter to Drive, as the engraved diagram on the chrome details. Good power, good braking, and straight tracking, this car proves itself to be a turnkey show car that does everything well. Unfortunately the cool tachometer is not working and we also note the wipers don't turn off once engaged. All other functions however, do. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Impalas, especially SS versions, leave the mall like they're being chased by lions and by that, we mean quickly. So if this one has your attention, tell your pride at home you'll be making a solo safari to Classic Auto Mall to try and capture something you need to survive, or at least to wake up with a smile on your face each day.
