"1962 Ford Thunderbird Hardtop
""The 1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe was the most popular model in the line this year with 68,127 built. The Landau model received a vinyl top and the faux landau bars. Up to 15 percent of the total hardtops may be Landaus."" Over-drive-magazine.com
For consignment, a 1962 Ford Thunderbird Hardtop with a title verified 81,310 actual miles. This factory A/C car has a rebuilt original engine done about 11,000 miles ago and tri-power was added 6,000 miles ago, according to our consignor.
Exterior
A wonderfully textured Thunderbird Landau covered top all in black with the chromed Landau bars on the B pillars tops this beauty. Raven Black panels, nice chrome, good bright work, and correct badging awaits its key being turned so it can stretch its legs on some open highway. From its bullet nose to the thruster rear tail lights straight steel with well minded gaps abound, while ornamental trim pieces dash across the rear fender as if in motion. Modest fins top the afterburner tail lights and the smooth, chrome bumper connects with the beauty rings around the red. Glass is all good and fender skirts on back frame Kelsey Hayes chromed wires with knockoff hubs are wrapped in Coker tires with a late 2018 date code. Imperfections are few on this beauty and include some minor inclusions, light scratch marks, a scuff, and a few chips.
Interior
A wrap around dual eyebrow dash with contrasting medium beige padded vinyl, is mixed with a wide curving horizontal ribbed aluminum panel, that contains all the round chromed instruments and essential knobs and controls. This curving also continues downward to the center console, where the climate controls are located. The aluminum continues back and forms a cigarette station, and then turns to the Medium Beige vinyl, and creates a nice storage area and armrest. Medium Beige vinyl covered bucket seats flank the console and are in very good condition. A flip of the setbacks forward, one finds a wonderful padded bench stretching from side to side. The perforated headliner is also in good condition. On the doors more horizontal ribbed aluminum, and chromed power toggles for the power windows. The original radio was converted to AM/FM/iPod by Retro Radio.
Drivetrain
Under the hood the rebuilt original 390ci V8 showing like new with ""THUNDERBIRD"" emblazoned silver valve covers. On top is a tri power carburetion system that feeds the engine, while not original to the car it was an available option. Behind is a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission sending power to 3.00 gears in a Ford 9 inch rear axle. The engine bay is looking sporty and highly detailed right down to the FoMoCo orange wiper washer bag. Power brakes, power drums, and air conditioning are on board.
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust can be seen on some parts underneath; however it is minor. Unibody seams look very healthy, as do the floor pans. Independent coil springs for the front ride provide, and leaf springs for the back along with power drum brakes all around all good. Dual exhaust run cleanly through stock style mufflers and immediately terminates out back
Drive-Ability
We enter this black bird and are immediately reminded just how cool it is to pilot one of these from a spectacular interior design. The 390 charges forward with good power and the body stays flat during cornering. We note the car does pull right on braking and the brake lights themselves are not working. All other functions on this high flyer work as they should and we soar back into the mall to find a place on the showroom floor! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Mid-century modern is all the rage and if there's one car that exemplifies the automotive's contribution to the movement, it's the bullet birds of 1962. You can just imagine Frank Sinatra cruising through Palm Springs in this car! Well, you don't have to be Frank nor live in Palm Springs to enjoy this representative cultural icon.
