"1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
""Aficionados are made, not born. Corvette enthusiasm, like manhood, is a tempering influence of experience. It begins when you're urging your faithful family sedan along some twisty bit of road and a Corvette slips by like you were just another bend in the highway. It reaches its peak with you, your checkbook in hand, savoring the view from the driver's seat of that wondrous automobile, and imagining yourself expertly answering the challenge of an Alpine pass."" From a 1962 Corvette print ad.
For consignment, a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing 29,207 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was subject to a frame off restoration and everything from the brakes, exhaust, ignition, interior, and engine components have been added or rebuilt.
Exterior
This Vette makes a striking presence in two stage New Wave Blue paint covering everything from the headlight bezels to the infamous Corvette side coves and highlighting the character lines with just enough shadowing. The paint is complemented by side vent detail, the rocker panel trim, the windshield frame that wraps the cabin as well, and of course, the chrome bumpers at each end. Quad tail lights pop off the blue paint with their red lenses and chrome rings and the Corvette emblem on the decklid is a like a little work of art included as ornamentation. 15-inch Vision Wheels with argent spokes are a nice choice here and are wrapped in 215/70R15 tires with a mid 2023 date code. Close up, we note imperfections that include scuffs to the stainless trim, minor inclusions in the paint, gap issue with the decklid, paint run, orange peel, and underpaint on the chin. The fiberglass hardtop with black vinyl skin is in excellent condition.
Interior
Dynamic door panels include sweeping trim over black vinyl, a knob handled door opener, and a pair of jet-age reflectors and both doors present well. The black vinyl seats seem to melt into the contours of the tonneau and both thrones are in great condition. Up front, a three spoke sport steering wheel fronts the dramatically arching speedometer underscored by race inspired round gauges while bits of ivory appear in the handle of the turn signal stalk and the ball atop the floor shifter. The center stack artfully holds the AM/FM radio, some knobs and a clock, all showing a touch of patina while the passenger gets a grab handle housed in an arching cove, all with the same bit of patina. The trunk is fully finished and clean. Both the dash pad and carpet are newer.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 350ci V8 with a four barrel carburetor and T10 4-speed manual transmission from 1963. It sends power to the rear axle with 3.36 gears. Our consignor reports the car has HEI ignition, newer starter, carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, NOS radiator, clutch, pressure plate, alternator, battery and cables, and heater core.
Undercarriage
We find clean conditions underneath with dual exhaust running through stock style mufflers and exiting just behind each rear wheel. The new front brakes are discs and the rebuilt rears are drums. Suspension entails coil springs up front with leaf springs in back. Our consignor states there's a newer gas tank and lines and that the exhaust is newer as well.
Drive-Ability
We fire this blue beauty up and are treated to a pleasing exhaust note as we row the gears around the test loop where the car performs well, providing plenty of power, straight tracking, and satisfying handling. Functionally, we find the tachometer, low beams, wipers and right turn signal not working, but all other operating items in the car work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a well sorted and visually stunning Corvette that has just enough custom touches to render it different from the run of the mill classic Vette. Leave the top at home and cruise this Vette up and down Main Street for the ultimate driving experience!
