"1962 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
With the creative influences of such incredible engineering talents as Edward Cole, Zora Arkus Duntov and Bill Mitchell behind it, the C1 Corvette had emerged as an American classic, but one that was ready to undergo a transformation into something completely new and exciting. The 1962 model year represents the end of an era for the Chevrolet Corvette. Over the course of ten years, the Corvette had evolved from Harley Earl's conceptual two seat sports car into a vehicle that rivaled sports cars around the world with an unabashed reputation for performance and fun.
For consignment, a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette convertible with a title verified 77,734 actual miles and a numbers matching engine. Every single 1962 Corvette we've had the honor to list at the mall has successfully found a new owner and we hope to keep that streak alive with this beauty. Clearly, classic Corvettes are special and desirable American sports cars.
Exterior
Red was often used to show military force in the Roman empire, so Chevrolet dubbed one of their reds as Roman Red, as seen on this car. The dual headlights set in the sculpted fascia are accentuated by chrome spears that run between them and along the fender top. At that point, the wrap-around windshield takes center stage, while in profile, the car exhibits the first year of the body colored cove rather than a contrasting color, and it's fronted by a slanted vent and crossed flag emblem. The monochromatic coverage is especially appealing on the back end where four tail lights are embedded and blend with a chrome bumper with decorative rings and like all them brightwork on the car, is in very nice condition. A white canvas soft top is also in good shape with some typical light hazing of the plastic and faux knock offs covering the 15-inch wheels. Imperfections include some light scratches, sizable bubbles on the hood, random chips, scuffs, faded paint on the crossed flags, and a blemish on the white canvas.
Interior
Wonderful black vinyl door panels are extra cool with their double red safety lights, almost a vertical nod to the tail lights. Low back bucket seats, also in black vinyl, are sculpted into the boot cover and both the doors and seats present nicely. The upright steering wheel, large and thin by today's standard, was sporty in 1962 and not unlike the British sports cars of the era. A large arched speedometer sits above an amazingly artful dash, full of cylindrical gauges in black casings with metallic knobs below. The speedometer goes to 160 mph and the center tachometer redlines at 6,500 rpm. A horizontal radio, in this case an AM/FM/Cassette unit, tops the center stack, above the fan controls and analog clock. A deep cove in front of the passenger is fronted by a grab handle and the white knobbed shifter is perched on the transmission hump and surrounded by black loop style carpet which covers the floor and looks great. The trunk is super clean and lined with a fitted rubber mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, the numbers matching 327ci V8 shows some usage but remains clean enough to show off. It puts out 300 horsepower and is mated to a Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission that transfers power to the rear axle with 3.36 gears and Positraction. There is no air conditioning, no power brakes, and no power steering on board.
Undercarriage
Generally clean underneath with signs of use but no notable marring of any kind. The dual exhaust travels through stock style mufflers and exits without fanfare behind the rear valance. We have disc brakes up front and drums in the rear while suspension puts coil springs at the front wheels and leaf springs out back.
Drive-Ability
A prime to the 4-barrel carburetor and she starts right up. We notice some dry rot on the tires so our drive is very limited, but we still test functionality which passes with flying colors. Here's one you can drive and show with pride. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
In the words of Fernando Lamas, (compliments of Billy Crystal), ""you look marvelous!"", and anyone would who takes this car for a spin. Your average 95 pound weakling will suddenly be cool behind the wheel of this iconic American treasure. But it doesn't matter how much you can bench press, owning this car with make you Mr. or Mrs. Universe every time you hit the road. Get ready to sign autographs or at the very least, to answer questions at every red light!
