"1960 Pannonia Deluxe 250 TLF
""The most successful of Hungarian motorcycles - and unfortunately the last, was Pannonia. The production on Pannonia motorcycles began in Budapest in 1954, when the factory changed, to promote sales and export, the old product name ""Csepel"" to Pannonia which cross refers to ancient Roman times. The looks of Pannonia and latest Csepel have strong styling influences of 50's Italian and the production of Pannonia motorcycles lasted for 21 years, during which the brand became very popular."" https://pannonia.rulli.ee
For consignment, a 1960 Pannonian Deluxe 250 TLF showing 129 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Although the company produced nearly a million units, it is believed that less than 50 of them exist in the United States.
Exterior
This bike was subject to an older restoration but a recent tune up, and has visually held up very nicely with handsome red and cream contrasting paint, with black highlights that include the knee pads on the tank and the saddle with its cream piping. Rounded fenders don't just hover over the tires, but envelop them at the top and when combined with the straight edge from the handlebars to the seat, presents an attractive profile. The sidecar is the fantastic facsimile of a torpedo and could pass for an amusement park ride. It has its own fender which carries the marker lights front and rear and coordinated graphics that depict motion even when parked. The company logo is on the tank and ornamental cream graphics display on the airbox cover. Overall, the paint is in great shape. Imperfections noted include a crack in the paint on the tank and some rough surface on the frame.
Functionality
The housing of the single headlight is where you'll find the speedometer which shows some patina and resides ahead of the handlebars with white handle grips. There are two sets of foot pegs below and of course, a full seat for one in the sidecar. A simple tail light perches off the rear fender and no turn signals are present.
Drivetrain
Our powerplant is a 247cc 2 stroke single cylinder engine, producing 14 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor and driving the rear wheel via a chain and 4-speed manual transmission. Dual exhaust split sides and travel through a chrome tailpipe and drum brakes are front and rear with 19-inch chrome wire wheels. Suspension consists of a telescopic fork up front and swing arm with dual shocks in the back. The nibs can still be seen on the new tires and our consignor also states there is a new battery on board. The engine and components present in clean, show worthy condition.
Collectors rejoice! Here is a rare motorcycle from the eastern bloc, one touted for its beauty and design, even as it could not keep up with modern standards toward the end of its run. They were designed for a sidecar but actually having the sidecar is sweeter than a slice of Dobos torta, (Hungarian cake)!
