From the 1959 brochure that touted wide track wheels, full circle glass, seats wider than a sofa, cross country cargo space, and much more!
For consignment, a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville convertible with a title verified 100,327 actual miles. Motor Trend magazine named the entire Pontiac brand ""the car of the year"" in 1959 and a commercial at the time touted Pontiac's ""wide track wheels, sterling performance, and live looks.""
Exterior
The jet age is alive and well with this long car sporting aircraft inspired shapes and trim, but that doesn't deter Pontiac from giving the car the rubberstamp front grille, dual headlights, fine mesh inward facing twin grilles, and laser straight chrome bumper. Then, as if contracted by the Air Force, the wide hood wears an aerodynamic V in the sheet metal, flanked by torpedo shaped fender ornaments that trail back as if in flight. The curved front windshield, elongated canvas roof and long side windows are dwarfed by the rear section of the car, here in two stage Cameo Ivory. A midline body trim sweeps back as if mapping a high G-force turn of a jet, just below a torpedo shaped protrusion in the sheet metal under pointed fins. And that takes us to the back where a spectacular design includes jet engine afterburners dressed as reverse lights under a double edged wing underscored by glowing red ovals and a striated rear panel over a bumper that continues the theme with wing-like flares. Spectacular! Overall, the paint appears in original condition and includes rock chips, scratches, other chips, bubbles, scrapes, and areas with surface rust.
Interior
The inside is a period treat for the senses, especially the eyes, where 50's meets 60's in a combination of colors and materials beginning on the door panels. A sputnik star tops panels that are red and white intermingling panels and bold polished trim. Electric window switches accompany cranks for the vent window and some loose material on the driver's side, the doors present nicely. Black, red and white leather and vinyl alternate to cover the front bucket seats with polished braces and stitched inserts and front and back seats are in great shape. A lipstick red steering wheel is augmented by a full and polished horn ring but your eyes will be drawn to the chrome accenting of the instrument cluster and mid panel trim. Pontiac is spelled out in segmented mirror like trim and an AM radio contains silver knobs in a line of knobs. The curved A-pillars are also mirror like and top elongated bracing that becomes part of the door frame. Red carpet flows over the floor and the massive trunk is fully finished with clean paint and a fitted plaid mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a date-correct 389ci V8 with 3-2bbl carburetors and a 315 horsepower rating. It's mated to a Hyrdamatic 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear axle and 3.23 gears. The car is equipped with power brakes and power steering.
Undercarriage
Some of the red oxide primer is peeling, but what's there makes a nice backdrop for a clean underside where we find dual exhaust going through a stock style muffler and power drum brakes are on all four wheels. Suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
This behemoth of a Pontiac glides across the test loop with great aplomb and the visibility up front is panoramic. There's good power, straight tracking, a smooth ride and braking on demand. We note the left turn signal and brake lights are not working and the passenger front window does not go up with the driver's master switch. All other functions operate as they should on this Bonneville. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
About 11,000 1959 Bonneville convertibles were built but when was the last time you saw one? This is a fantastic piece of mid-century modern design where big proportions, space age design, and exciting materials were used. At about 220 inches long, you'll need to make some room for this beauty, but we suspect you won't miss the storage bins when you walk past this car in the garage each day.
