"1956 Chevrolet 210 4 Door Sedan
Long before they became legendary, Chevrolet Tri Fives went through some subtle changes year to year. In 1956, the 210 was slightly longer than the 1955, a full width front bumper was standard, the fuel cap would be hidden behind the tail lamp, (a daring design that would become iconic), and trim and tail light design were slightly changed. That didn't deter production and with all body styles included, nearly a million 210's were produced in 1956 including more than 82,000 2 door sedans.
For consignment, a 1956 Chevrolet 210 4 door sedan showing 3,935 miles but the true miles are unknown. Owned by our consignor since 2009 and strongly encouraged by a friend to do a frame off restoration, and that's exactly what he did. It was mostly a DIY project, but the paint and body were done professionally.
Exterior
Using original GM colors, two stage Tropical Turquoise was applied under India Ivory for a classic configuration that we never get tired of seeing. The white covers the roof and the pillars and as a post car, that includes the B-pillar, then delineated with stainless trim and covering the rear quarter and trunk. So attractive is this design that we hope whoever originally penned this layout back in the 50's was fittingly compensated! Big chrome bumpers, a substantial grille and its frame, and the window trim are complemented here by the 15"" Wheel Vintique chrome wheels carrying 215/70R15's on all four wheels for a nice square stance. The tail light nacelles are wonderfully ornate and in great shape housing relatively small lights. The jet plane hood ornaments heads up a car that has excellent paint and brightwork, but is not without some imperfections. Those include some missing paint and runs on the rocker panel, some surface rust bleeding through paint in a body line, and some uneven filler.
Interior
A new interior was a result of the restoration and it shines bright! Each of the four doors is paneled with two shades of turquoise on neatly designed doors wearing black knobbed hardware, and all are in fantastic condition. The colors translate well to the vinyl and cloth bench seats which have silver accents that really connect the exterior motif on the inside. As even the seatbelts are turquoise, our first break from the color comes in the form of a robust, black plastic steering wheel with a substantial chrome horn ring in full circle. Up ahead, a jukebox like atmosphere with a bowtie stamped mid panel flanking the fan shaped instrument cluster here housing AutoMeter gauges with bean shaped windows, red needles, digital readouts, all within polished trim and all of it is spotless. The turquoise dash pad is like blue lip gloss with twin rising humps, a turquoise clock, and in the center, an AM/FM radio. A tachometer lives in a fabricated center console over, yes, turquoise carpet mats with vinyl trim and Chevrolet rubber mats. In the trunk, a black rubber mat fits cleanly and shares the space with a spare and a fire extinguisher.
Drivetrain
Clean, show worthy, and a bit whimsical too as a vintage Steve Canyon metal lunchbox is mounted next to the 350ci V8 in the bay. A Demon 4-barrel carburetor sits atop the blue intake manifold while a TH350 3-speed automatic sends power back to the 10 bolt rear with 3.08 gears. A Wilwood reservoir is attached to the booster that powers the disc brakes up front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Nicely sorted and clean underneath where black paint covers evenly while dual exhaust meet at an X pipe, then find their way through shiny MagnaFlow mufflers, finally exiting via chrome tips just beyond the bumper. A chrome flywheel cover adds some dress up underneath and has a few drops of clean oil hanging on, while the blue oil pan is dry. Minimal surface rust and bare knuckles round out the underside where coil spring and leaf spring make up the suspension, front and rear respectively.
Drive-Ability
This is a nice build and performs almost as good as it looks. The 350 fires right up and has a nice exhaust note while providing plenty of power to propel the four door around the test loop and the frame off work has paid off because all functions operate just as planned! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The days of favoring 2 door Tri Fives over 4 doors are over! Especially when you encounter a build like this, the number of doors becomes secondary to its desirability. Plus, we've grown accustomed to four doors in the modern age and the convenience that comes with it, so vintage four doors now seem like a foreshadowing relic of a bygone era that lingers in today's vast selection of cars. This '56 should absolutely be on your radar if a Tri Five has been on your mind for any length of time. Turn the key! The work has been done for you. The only elbow grease you'll need is when you sign on the dotted line and make it yours!
