"1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 Door Sedan
In the ""you learn something every day"" department, we offer this little factoid. Did you know the 1955 ""egg crate"" grille was inspired by Ferraris? All you have to do is look at a 1952 Ferrari Barchetta to see the obvious inspiration. The grille design didn't last long, but the adoration for the '55 is still going strong! More than 340,000 units were built in 1955 and utilized thirteen different body styles and trims.
For consignment, a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 door sedan showing 76,245 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Lots of newer parts are on this well sorted classic, including the brakes, suspension components, and that ever important front grille.
Exterior
Some strong hot rod styling here begins with the removal of the '55's big front bumper, leaving a forward leaning, brick faced grin pushing towards the wind. Then, there's the paint, stunning two stage Candy Apple Red with some fantastic ghost flames that flick down the side, almost imperceptibly. Split trim characterizes the '55 and a vertical extension meets the shoulder line at slight dip in the otherwise straight line. And of course, the matching trim around the fuel door is epic. Out back, a sizable painted cartoon mouse motor breaks up a sea of candied red and dual exhaust tips symmetrically exit with the bumperettes while blue dot tail lights add some subtle coolness. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels wear staggered meats with a mid 2022 date code. Imperfections include some bubbles, chips, and touch ups.
Interior
Handsome saddle leather is stretched over the inner doors and patterned with a pleated, smooth body, and carpeted corner kick panel. The same supple leather covers the split bench seat up front with matching plastic shell and perfect rear seat. Attention to detail is evident in the steering wheel rim, also saddle leather wrapped around billet spokes on a polished tilt column leading to an apple red dash in stock configuration to include the bowties stamped mid panel. Augmentations include a tachometer on top of the dash, an AM/FM/Cassette radio in the center, and a tripod of gauges under the dash. Beautiful light brown carpet and mats are edged in saddle, front and rear, and the trunk is finished with all the same materials and is show worthy on its own! The headliner? More saddle leather! Wow.
Drivetrain
And speaking of show worthy, chrome components make the engine sparkle and our consignor states this is a 350ci and it wears a pair of Edelbrock 600cfm 4-barrel carburetors. It's backed by a mid 60's era Muncie M20 4-speed manual which routes power to the rear axle and 3.70 gears. To slow the car, we have power brakes as disc in front and drums in the rear. Unpolished headers begin the exhaust process. On the underside of the hood we note more whimsical cartoon mouse paintings!
Undercarriage
Clean underneath, more driver quality than the topside, and some old school traction bars assist the leaf springs in back. Up front, its coil spring suspension and dual exhaust travels through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to chrome exit tips, but also have the option of cut outs just prior to the mufflers. There's evidence of some encapsulated rust repair on the inner rockers while the undersides of the doors are clean.
Drive-Ability
The dichotomous experience begins with a mag wheeled ride and quickly becomes a luxury cruiser once you're surrounded by warm saddle brown leather. But a turn of the key brings you back to the street with a bellowing exhaust and a wild swing of the tach needle. The car moves out well, no complaints about power here, and curved glass front and rear help with visibility all around. We note the heater blower and reverse lights don't work but all other functions operate as expected. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
In a 1955 print ad, Chevy boasts of the ""show car styling"" with sweep side windshield, four fender visibility, ball race steering, and high level ventilation. Little did they know that 70 years later, the car would still be a stylish stand out and quintessential show car. If you don't have a Tri-Five in your stable, you're missing out. Here's your chance to fill that garage bay with something special. The Candy Apple Red flamed exterior will have you salivating, but clean up before you enter the luxurious interior.
