"This post-war Cadillac is a decent driver quality car with needs. The first all-new postwar Cadillacs had arrived in 1948, sporting tail fins inspired by the Lockheed P-38 fighter plane and creating what would become the tailfin competition that lasted until the mid-1960s.
Originally designed to complement the entry level Series 61, this example was finished in Cobalt Blue (code 2), the car's paint is in good, original order but the paint and chrome sport various blemishes around the body. The chrome bumpers, including the Dagmar front bumper, fit tightly to the body, the cargo area is clean and engine bay is tidy.
This Cadillac was made in Detroit, Michigan and left the assembly line with extra options – E-Z-Eye glass (code E) and an automatic heating system with under seat and rear defogger (code X). It rolls on white stripe bias-ply tires mounted on steel wheels topped with full wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are all in good, original order. The car rides on a 126-inch wheelbase.
Under the hood is Cadillac's 331 CID V-8 engine, then in its fifth production year. It breathes through dual exhausts. Backing the motor is a two-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. Driver convenience features included power steering and power windows.
Inside, the car is decked out in Light Gray Figured Broadcloth with Dark Gray Plain Broadcloth (code 51). The front bench seat is in satisfactory order. Some of the upholstery buttons are loose or free of their mounts. The two-spoke steering wheel and dashboard are in satisfactory order, as are the inner door panels. The rear bench seat has a fold-down center armrest. The backside of the front bench has a seat-wide strap to drape coats, scarves and other items over during travel. The most modern item in the car is a Sparkomatic AM/FM stereo with a five-band graphic equalizer. Brake lights are inop along with fuel and temp gauge. Windows work but slowly. Door glass cracks on left front right rear.
The 1953 Series 62 saw a redesigned grille with heavier integral bumper and bumper guards, the repositioning of parking lamps directly under the headlights, chrome ""eyebrow"" type headlamp doors, and one-piece rear windows without division bars. Wheel discs were fashioned in an attractive new disced design. Series 62 bodystyles were identified by non-louvered rear fenders, the use of thin bright metal underscores on the bottom rear of the cars only and the decoration of both hood and deck lid with Cadillac crests and V-shaped ornaments.
Competition to this Cadillac in 1953 included Buick's Roadmaster, Chrysler's New Yorker DeLuxe, Lincoln's Cosmopolitan, Oldsmobile's 98 and Packard's Patrician.
If you're looking for a new vehicle project that offers choices, this is a viable candidate. You could bring it back to showroom new, when Cadillac was the Standard of the World; make it into a lead sled; or any number of other possibilities. The first step? Come to MotoeXotica Classic Cars to see it in person, today!
