This 1951 Mercury Coupe is a masterfully executed custom "Lead Sled" known as "The Bean." Built over a five-year period by its owner in Wisconsin, the car features an extensive list of body, chassis, and interior modifications, all highlighted by a striking Camaro Synergy Green paint job with custom flames and hand painted pinstriping. Power is provided by a bored and warmed-up Corvette fuel injected 350ci V8 paired with a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission. Showing just 4,500 miles since the build was completed eight years ago, this award-winning custom is now offered with a clean title.
Exterior & Body Customization
The exterior represents a masterclass in traditional and modern custom bodywork, with nearly every panel modified by the builder. The car was initially shown in Synergy Green before the custom flames were added to break up the monochromatic look.
The roof has been chopped 4.5 inches, and the windshield has been laid back 3 inches for a radical, low-slung profile.
Features a 1951 Mercury front bumper narrowed by 3 inches, Rambler bumper guards, a custom Corvette grille, and a louvered panel hiding bright LED directional lights.
The unique quad headlights were sourced from a Porsche 411 and mounted on an angle, while the 1975 Ford LTD taillights are cleanly frenched into the rear quarter panels.
The handles have been shaved and replaced with remote door and trunk poppers. The top door moldings were repositioned up from their stock location, and the front fenders feature a flipped and heavily modified 1956 Chevrolet flare.
Outfitted with 3-plug dummy side pipes, dummy spotlights, dual functional antennas frenched and mounted up front along with green LED under-carriage lighting.
The cabin features a completely overhauled custom Thunderbird interior upholstered in premium super soft Ultra Leather. The metalwork centers around a beautifully integrated 1959 Chevrolet dashboard with Classic Industries Gauges.
Power-adjustable front driver bucket seat, sourced from a 1967 Thunderbird, while the rear wrap-around seating is from a 1965 Thunderbird.
A trick custom center console features a flip-up panel concealing the digital Vintage Air conditioning controls, air suspension switches, and power window regulators. Features dual electric glove boxes that smoothly pop open and closed at the touch of a button.
The door panel speaker covers and the rear window package tray feature custom, laser-cut "51 Mercury" script detailing crafted specifically for this build. An overhead console and ambient green interior lighting complete the cabin.
Under the hood, the engine bay is highly detailed, featuring polished components and stainless steel trim underneath.
A Corvette-sourced 350ci V8 that has been bored .030 over and fitted with a mild camshaft for a healthy idle and improved street performance.
A heavy-duty 4-core aluminum radiator handles cooling duties, assisted by dual 2-speed electric fans.
The body rides on a 1968 Chevy Nova front subframe and chassis setup. It features a modern Ridetech air suspension system, giving "The Bean" its signature slammed stance at the show while remaining entirely drivable on the highway.
Power front disc brakes provide modern stopping power with reliable drums in the rear, all spinning a rugged 9-inch Ford rear axle.
Fitted with classic wide whitewall tires accented by Dodge Royal hubcaps.
