Gateway Classic Cars of San Antonio/Austin is proud to present this 1951 Mercury Custom, a classic lead-sled style cruiser finished in a distinctive Pagan Gold Metallic Matte exterior with a flat clear coat over a custom Black, Red, and Zebra-pattern interior. Built to capture the spirit of the iconic 1950s custom car movement, this Mercury features body modifications completed by Frank Palmer and paintwork by Noah at Skidmore Kustoms. The result is a one-of-a-kind custom that earned a place at the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) and is ready to turn heads wherever it goes.
According to the consignor, power comes from a rebuilt 255 CID Flathead V8 built by renowned Flathead engine builder Russ Monte. The engine features Fenton aluminum heads, a Fenton intake topped with dual Stromberg carburetors, a Stromberg electronic distributor, a Powermaster alternator conversion, and a 12-volt electrical system. Power is sent through a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive and a Gennie floor shifter, delivering a classic driving experience with improved highway cruising capability. The consignor also states that a new wiring harness was recently installed.
The exterior showcases numerous traditional custom touches, including a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air grille, 1955 Oldsmobile headlights, Mercury Monarch (Canadian) taillights, and all-new chrome. Diamondback Auburn wide whitewall radial tires complete the unmistakable lead-sled look while providing modern road manners. The Pagan Gold Metallic Matte finish highlights the Mercury's flowing body lines and custom craftsmanship.
Inside, the custom Black, Red, and Zebra-pattern interior continues the car's unique personality. The cabin features comfortable cloth seating, a new headliner, and a 1940 Ford steering wheel, blending period-inspired styling with thoughtful updates. Every detail complements the custom exterior while maintaining the timeless appeal expected from a classic Mercury.
With its professionally built custom body, Pagan Gold Metallic Matte finish, rebuilt Flathead V8 with Fenton performance upgrades, 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and numerous traditional custom touches, this 1951 Mercury Custom is an outstanding example of the lead-sled era. According to the consignor, this Mercury was previously owned by Bryan Newman, who performed as Lady Gaga's trumpet player.
