"1951 Ford Victoria Tudor Hardtop
""Under the crest of quality, the '51 Ford steps ahead for years ahead. Here is the car that progressive planning designed, engineered, and made come true. In its every detail the '51 Ford is styled and built not just for this year and next, for the years ahead."" From the 1951 Ford brochure.
For consignment a 1951 Ford Victoria Tudor hardtop showing 28,186 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one's been nosed, decked, and has parts from a Lincoln, a Dodge, and a Buick. Move over, Mr. Cash, because the next owner of this car will have the ""only one there is around""!
Exterior
First, the color. This is Lavender Pearl with a lower accent in black, delineated by a swoosh of stainless trim from a mid 50's Buick and on each side of the car with modest pinstripe flourishes to break up large panels of the light purple. A custom grille bar does away with the torpedo add ons normally found on the Tudor and the nose lacks the ornament and Ford crest, creating a hood as smooth as a dolphin's forehead. The headlights are from a 1955 Lincoln while the tail lights are borrowed from a 1956 Dodge, only this time turned horizontal. Fender skirts streamline the shaved sides even more and the amazing curved rear window is framed in ornate stainless trim, while the front is flanked by spotlights. Imperfections in the black paint include some cracking, paint runs, and filler while the purple also shows cracking in several spots.
Interior
Lavender and white doors include a painted sill and patterned vinyl along with black carpeted kick panels and both are in good shape. White piping adorns the tuck and roll purple inserts of the white split bench seat, nicely matched to the exterior paint which seeps in to cleanly cover the dash. The rear seat repeats the pattern and the sidewalls are particularly nice and even the package shelf is finished with pleated purple vinyl. What a cool steering wheel we have up front, white with a boomerang shaped central spoke and while it has some hairline cracks and taped repair, it's got a great look. Think black circles and you'll nail the dashboard where black knobs, a black faced speedometer, and the AM radio take their place in a finely perforated backplate. Mounted under the dash is a tachometer and an AM/FM/Cassette radio, along with a Vintage Air system. The floor of the car and the trunk are both covered in black carpeted mat with lavender trim, more attention to detail that pays off with this visual delight. Even the ceiling bows are lavender against the white headliner, and it's all in excellent condition.
Drivetrain
Clean components add to a clean engine bay where we find a 302ci V8 sporting a 2-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual transmission, on the tree, which routes power to the rear axle and 4.10 gears. Power drum brakes are employed on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
No complaints under here as the underside shows very minimal surface rust and just a bit of residual oil. The dual exhaust flows through Smithy mufflers before finding their way to straight, chrome tips in back. Suspension includes coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
We take our place in the purple people pleaser and cruise out onto the test loop and for a big car, are afforded excellent visibility thanks to high windows and curved glass. The 302 has plenty of pep and in the sunlight, the car magically takes on a more blue hue. Of note are things that don't work are the wipers, and according to our consignor, the speedometer is not accurate at higher speeds. All other functions onboard operated as intended and we rolled this slick ride back to port. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Some cars come to us with a patchwork of materials and mods that seem somewhat cobbled together. But this is a tight package, you might say, as the palette is complete and attractive and it needs virtually nothing to provide instantly gratifying nights out on the town. You'll soon be singing, ""You'll know it's me when I come through your town, I'm gonna ride around in style, I'm gonna drive everybody wild, cause I'll have the only one there is around!"".
