"1950 Plymouth Special DeLuxe 4 Door Sedan
""The more you know about the new Plymouth, and the more you drive it, the more convinced you are that not all the beauty is on the surface! Underneath the gleaming exterior are many outstanding mechanical features. You can't see them all, but you can feel them in action, and they make you say, Here's a beauty in more ways than one!"" From the 1950 brochure
For consignment, a 1950 Plymouth Special Deluxe 4 door sedan showing 53,407 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has remained in the same family since 1985, and that seems appropriate since Plymouth advertised the four door as ""A car for all the family. Longer, lower, and wider looking. Spacious interior, luxurious appointments, brilliant performance."".
Exterior
We enter the 50's with the same basic lines of the '49, but this time we're adding more robust chrome to the grille and bumpers, a trend that would continue through the decade with ever increasing weight. Accentuated fenders would eventually phase out, but they're here in all their glory, accented with stainless spears at different heights, brought together visually thanks to the trim that encircles the cabin. A bold ribbed rocker panel is a vestigial feature from the running board days and connects with a polished gravel guard contoured to the rear hip. 15-inch wheels wear white wall tires and proper wheel covers and complete the showroom look of this top of the line 1950 Plymouth. We could not find any glaring exterior imperfections.
Interior
Tan and taupe cloth door panels are sandwiched by the brown of a wooden sill and vinyl kick panels and only the kick panels show any usage. Up front, the bench is covered in a gray patterned cloth, clean and intact and the rear seat is a twin in material and configuration, adding elbow rests on the sides and an ashtray on the back of the front bench. An ivory steering wheel is the perfect complement to the convincing faux woodgrain dash that houses three wonderfully authentic period gauges. Embedded in the chrome mid-panel is an AM radio below a grated speaker that would make a jukebox jealous, all over vent controls and ivory levers. This metal band shows some light pitting but we would have no problem taking this car out for show. The floor is covered with a rubberized topping and the headliner retains its mohair padded configuration and has held up well. A sizable trunk is adorned with a fitted jute mat and houses a spare tire.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, an original looking and clean 218ci L-head inline six cylinder rated at 97 horsepower and pumped fuel through a 1-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual transmission backs it up and routes power to the rear axle housing 3.73 gears. Drum brakes are found at each wheel.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with minimal surface rust, oil noted on the rear differential and residual oil on the flywheel cover and transmission. We note one spot of swiss cheese on a body brace, but the rest of the underside including frame and inner panels are solid. The single exhaust is clean and appears to be newer and it flows through a stock style muffler and exits with the help of a deflector attached to the tailpipe, but barely visible out back. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The 218 comes right to life and we set off onto the test loop, all the while thinking how proud the new owner must have been driving this off the showroom floor, anxious to get home and take his family on that first outing. And the ride would be pleasant, with decent power for the times, decent visibility, and a very comfortable interior for front and rear seat occupants. We note our radio does not work, the wipers only make a sweep and then stop, and she pulls left when braking. Beyond that, this Plymouth sails as smooth as the Mayflower on a calm sea and all functions work. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Just a solid clean example of luxury commuting in 1950. An exciting new decade awaited, and the Plymouth line showed a style and optimism and reflected that in their cars and advertisements. This one has been well maintained for at least 40 years and is Americana on four wheels. Set sail in this Special Deluxe and start your voyage of vintage ownership.
