"1949 Plymouth P18 Special Deluxe Convertible
The 1949 Plymouth P18 is a classic American automobile, representing Plymouth's first new postwar design. It was part of the Plymouth Deluxe and Special Deluxe line, with the P18 being the designation for the Special Deluxe models. These cars are known for their rounded fenders, clean interiors, and durable construction.
For consignment, a 1949 Plymouth P18 Special Deluxe convertible with a title verified 104,685 actual miles. The '49 brochure touts, ""Plymouth styling is smart, and practical too! Doors are wide at the bottom for easy entrance. Interiors are roomy and comfortable! Note the larger windshield and safer, wide angle vision"".
Exterior
This handsome car is bathed in Dark Green Metallic and enhanced by the presence of the tan canvas top and white wall tires. Side trim includes runs over the fenders, a band that underscores the window ledges, and a fantastic piece of stainless that caps the wedge shaped tail light detail. Gravel guards and door handle escutcheons add some extra extravagance to the exterior while the license plate is sandwiched between stainless spears. The designer's attention to detail is obvious on the front too and in profile, the car leans forward as if in motion, taking cues from the windblown sailing ship that is the hood ornament. Brightwork, glass, canvas top, and paint are in excellent condition and we could find no glaring exterior imperfections. We do note that the plastic window of the top is hazed.
Interior
Simple door panels are constructed of green vinyl with a bisecting trim piece and art deco ornamentation on the header. The split bench up front combines green vinyl and tan cloth that creates an attractive and clean presentation, mirrored on the rear bench and fully intact. A full horn ring adorns the green steering wheel leading to a three dial instrument cluster over chrome trim that takes on knobs and the AM radio under the central speaker that would be right at home on a jukebox. The speedometer shows some cracking of the clear front and some general patina is seen elsewhere on the dash, but overall, it's a wonderful period piece and in very good condition. Green loop carpet covers the floor and the trunk is in its raw form with loose jack and spare over a rubber mat.
Drivetrain
Driver quality are the conditions we find the 217.8ci L-head six cylinder in under the hood. It is rated at 97 horsepower, wears a 1-barrel carburetor, and has a 3-speed manual on the tree that sends power to the 3.90 gears in the rear axle. Drum brakes are found at all four wheels and the car runs on a 6-volt system.
Undercarriage
We find driver conditions here as well with some surface rust, oil on the rear differential and transmission with some grease build up as well, and one spot of thin metal rust in back. A single exhaust finds a stock style muffler and then a newer looking sections gives way to a steel tailpipe. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in the back and those leaves look newer.
Drive-Ability
There is indeed good visibility given the size of the windows although, as mentioned, the rear window is foggy. The seats are comfortable and the L-head runs smoothly through the test and the car handles imperfections in the road like butter. We do note it pulls left. The fantastic art deco radio is not working, but all other functions on board do. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A wonderfully upright post war design in a very nice color and having a clean interior checks all the boxes for a true American classic, and this 1949 Plymouth will be the pride of the next owner. On everyday streets, it's bound to get attention and with the top down, be prepared for stoplight conversations and gas station presentations. This is one fine '49 and the public will want more info!
