"1948 Plymouth P15-C Special Deluxe Club Coupe
""The Plymouth P15 of 1946-1948 are a great choice for anyone who wants to restore, collect, or simply drive a great American car of the post war 1940's. Between 1946 and early 1949 well over 1,000,000 P15's were sold. The P15 was a basic entry level car, but with plenty of the engineering innovations Chrysler Corporation was known for."" Oldmoparts.com
For consignment, a 1948 Plymouth P15-C Special Deluxe club coupe showing 39,694 miles, but the true mileage is unknown. Family owned since 1972, the car was restored in 1991 and many NOS parts were sourced from right here in our backyard at swap meets in Hershey and Carlisle.
Exterior
Quintessential 40's styling wrapped in a Plymouth Black package with more rounded mounds than a skateboard park, proud fenders showing a few years before automakers realized ""hey, we could widen the body, smooth the sides, and create more room inside!"". The shoulder line side trim is fantastic and accented by the parallel line on the front fender and the trim on the running board. Together with that incredible forward leaning glass and chrome hood ornament, the car is statuesque. Trim around the tail lights is complemented by the detail on the decklid, a red reflector with embossed Mayflower over a polished, cigar shaped trim piece, wow! The robust chrome grille is integrated into the bodywork while the chrome bumper and its tubular guard looks like it could push cattle out of the road. Some hairline cracking in the paint and a few chips denote the only imperfections on the exterior.
Interior
Gray cloth with some linear polished trim adorn the inner doors under a simulated sandalwood header and smooth vinyl kick panel that together create a handsome presentation. Pinstriped gray cloth seats are also smartly configured, beginning on the split bench up front with burgundy piping and base, and the rear bench with some column tufting and side armrests. Our steering wheel wears an auto parts store vinyl cover and some cracking is seen on the brown spokes while the horn ring presents cleanly. The dash has been painted with the sandalwood grain and surrounds deco inspired gauge trim on the horizontal meters. Ivory knobs abound throughout the dash, each one engraved and inked with the function they provide. It's jukebox city in the center stack where a push button AM radio is replete with chrome and speaker grates alternate vertical and horizontal and hidden doors blend in with the showy plating. The open floor is covered with a rubber mat, the gray headliner bears some age but fully intact, and the large trunk has a fitted rubber mat and spare tire.
Drivetrain
Lift the bulbous hood and we find the 218ci L-head inline 6 cylinder in original presentation and showing some patina. A 1-barrel carburetor provides the go juice and it's backed by a 3-speed manual transmission sending power to 3.73 gears in back. Drum brakes are utilized front and rear. The car remains on its original 6 volt system.
Undercarriage
Chock full of patina underneath with some road dirt built up, typical surface rust, and oil noted on the pans, caked grease on the knuckles, and oil as sling around the U-joints, but there's no invasive rust or broken parts. Like many of us, it's weathered but together! A single exhaust runs through a slightly dented stock style muffler and exits out back while coil springs make up the suspension in front and leaf springs are utilized in the back.
Drive-Ability
America is on the upswing as we enter this post war beauty, igniting the L-head to life and using the three on the tree to propel her forward. 75 series tires provide a comfortable ride that absorbs imperfections on our test loop and 95 horses on hand move the car in a measured, but steady bit of acceleration. The wipers are not working and that very cool chrome cladded radio is also not functioning. All other operational items work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a well sorted '48, restored but lovingly kept in mostly original configuration to provide an authentic post war experience with a sporty exterior and luxurious interior. This is an all around solid car and a testament to American design that is stunning in its simplicity. Make it yours today!
