"1947 Buick Model 56C Super Convertible Coupe
""When World War II ended, the automotive manufacturer's dream of ""pent up demand"" was realized. Buick was in a particularly good position since it had redesigned much of its line for 1942, and these cars were lightly face lifted and retrimmed for the post war boom. Gone were the prewar Century and Limited lines, but the 124 inch wheelbase, mid level Super returned with four models: two door sedanettes, convertibles, and four door sedans and woody station wagons. With prices averaging right around $2,000, Supers accounted for more than 75% of Buick's 1946 production, with the sedan being the most popular body choice."" Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1947 Buick 56C Super convertible coupe showing 108,231 actual miles. Restored in the 90's, the car recently received some mechanical work including a head and valve job and carburetor rebuild in 2026.
Exterior
This one combines the color of the Karate Kid Ford and the make of the Rain Main Buick, presenting with clean and dramatic Sequoia Cream two stage paint over bulbous and sweeping lines that simply define the era. A high nose slopes sharply downward on the sides to meet well defined fenders with top trim that emerges from the headlight rings and follows the downward trajectory and while it terminates at the door gap, the body lines continue with impossible style and panache, meeting the rear fender at the skirt line. The rounded decklid has attractive tail light design augmented by side, torpedo shaped lights and underscored by a generous wrap around chrome bumper. A big toothed grille grins up front and the bumper is a twin of the rear. The finishing touch are the stunning 15-inch wheels with caps and beauty rings along with wide white wall tires. Imperfections include unfortunate crazing on the hood and throughout, as well as chips and scratches, some of which have been touched up. The black canvas top is in great condition.
Interior
Some great contrast and design is achieved by the Oxblood red inside, beginning on the door panels which are in nice shape with the driver's electrical switch plate exposed. Beige cloth serves as the insert around red leather on the inviting split bench seats, a pattern that is adopted by the rear bench. Up front, the colors blend with the exterior fronted by a banjo style steering wheel with full horn ring leading to gold backed deco printed gauges in the steel structure of the painted dashboard. The AM radio has just enough buttons for the Buick name to be displayed with ivory buttons on a chrome center grille flanked by camouflaged buttons that fit the pattern. The passenger gets a clock ahead and tan carpet fills the floor along with red leather in the footwells. The trunk is finished in brown cloth and presents cleanly.
Drivetrain
Clean features continue in the engine bay where you'll find a 248ci inline eight cylinder with 110 horsepower and a 2-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a 3-speed manual transmission sending power rearward through 4.45 gears. Buick Fireball is expressed on the blue engine for a clean and original presentation.
Undercarriage
This Super is super clean underneath where the single exhaust runs through a stock style exhaust on its way to the back. Drum brakes are at both ends and suspension includes coil springs at both ends with trailing arms in back.
Drive-Ability
Hard to believe this was just one step above entry level as it feels stately and rich and the 248 starts, idles and runs well as we make our way around the test loop. Functionally, everything works as it should except the brake lights and wipers. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
""Excellent driver, we're excellent drivers."" Or would you prefer ""wax on, wax off?"" This car did not appear in either movie and we think that's a loss to Hollywood. This is a fantastic design, artful by today's standards and grand by any standard. It's mostly well sorted and this post war beauty needs a new home. Tell us where to point the torpedo shaped hood ornament!
