"1940 Packard 110 Coupe
""This year something has been happening on Main Street all over America. By increasing thousands of average income motorists have discovered that they don't have to keep on buying ordinary cars, they can one a truly fine car. Take the case of the Harry Browns, typical Americans. Our close up shows their first eye opener – the discovery that their neighbors in the modest house next door have bought a Packard! A few days later, the Stedmans took them riding. ""Such a big, roomy car!"" admired Mrs. Brown. ""Watch her go."" Said Bill Stedman. Miles slipped by, hills bowed down, rough spots, vanished magically."" From a 1940 Packard print ad.
For consignment, a 1940 Packard 110 coupe showing 22,154 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Power steering, power brakes, and a positraction rear end? What's going on here? Let's dive in.
Exterior
We're liking the flat black primer coat as is, but it will also serve as the base for the color of your choice and the sky's the limit! The tall vertical grille with an art deco crown is flanked by side grilles constructed with finer gauge splines in the shape of opposing castle doors. A unique configuration of triple bumper guards line the chrome bar which has lost much of its shine but is fully intact and straight. Some Greek influence can be found on the crest of the engine vents which is shaped like an Olympic discus, embossed with the ""110"" designation and capping an incredible multi ported side vent. A split window floats over the sloped luggage compartment, flanked by modestly flared rear fenders that wear diminutive tail lights, underscored by a straight primered bumper with Packard script stamped into the metal and we note a trailer hitch below. 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels carry white wall tires. There is some bubbling on lower panels, a dent, and some cracked filler.
Interior
Well, the outside looks half done but the inside is ready to go with a beige and burgundy palette that begins on the door panels that combine red vinyl and carpet with a stitched beige insert and ivory knobbed controls. The split bench seat is topped with smooth, beige vinyl with a burgundy shell behind it while the door panel pattern is borrowed for the handsome package area behind the bench. A tan banjo style steering wheel fronts the spectacular woodgrain dashboard with art deco trim and stainless ringed gauges with white numbering over taupe faces. A clock to the right copies the speedometer and a modern heater system has been added under the dash. Beige and burgundy split again with red carpet on the floor and a beige headliner above.
Drivetrain
Some dark cherry parts and Packard engraving enhance the appearance of the 500ci Cadillac V8 under the hood, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor over and Edelbrock intake. It's mated to TH400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle out of a Trans Am with Positraction.
Undercarriage
Clean driver quality underneath with typical surface rust, a few drops of oil on the pan, and a film under the engine and transmission pan. Dual exhaust runs from headers and finds their way to FlowMaster muffler just before turning east and west and exiting out the sides. Suspension includes a Mustang II front end with power steering included, and leaf springs in the back. Brakes are power assisted with discs in front and drums in the rear and the car runs on a 12 volt system.
Drive-Ability
The beauty of the cabin makes you forget about the lack of paint on the outside and it's 1940 all over again! The V8 starts without issue and lets out a nicely aggressive exhaust note from the sides. She provides good power, straight tracking, and excellent handling. We note just the heater blower and clock not working but all other functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Now that you've seen the interior, maybe you've already chosen an exterior color. Our consignor says that it was Black Cherry at some point. But you've got options with paint and body really the only thing needed to make this a Packard show car. You might not score points on the Concours field, but at your local show, you might have the only Positraction Packard around!
