"1940 Oldsmobile Series 90 Custom Cruiser 4 Door Touring Sedan
""Series 90. A bigger and better eight, sensational in styling, in luxury and in performance. If it were built to your special order, the Olsdmbile Custom Cruiser could not offer you more modern styling, more luxurious comfort or more brilliant response to every performance situation. Never before in the history of motoring has a car of such outstanding character been offered at medium price."" From the 1940 sale brochure.
For consignment, a 1940 Oldsmobile Series 90 Custom Cruiser 4 door touring sedan showing 18,687 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. Mechanical components, wiring, glass, undercarriage and more have been addressed and where parts were needed, NOS or remanufactured factory components were used. Even the electric clock was cleaned and oiled for proper functionality.
Exterior
Oldsmobile's biggest and best equipped car for '40 is stately and well dressed, here in a coat of Shivran Green over its curvaceous lines. In profile, the car seems to surge forward when standing still and the perfect trim design includes a polished spear along the waistline, a grated insert on the front fenders, and a black gravel guard on the rear. The face is a complex array of horizontal and vertical grille elements, a highly polished nose emblem and hood trim, yellow fog lamps, chrome bumper with central bumper guard, and headlights with housing that melds into the wide fender with incredible smoothness and precision. The Olds crest appears on the hubcaps and wide white walls with an early 2024 date code wrap around the body matched wheels beautifully. Imperfections include some light pitting on the lower window reveal, bubbling on the hood, touched edge chips in several places, other inclusions, a small ding, paint runs, a touched area at rear bumper mount, and some light rock spray.
Interior
Deco style trim adorns the Light Brown cloth of the door panels in a stunning display that's capped by wooden window sills and all four doors are show quality. Broadcloth covers the front bench nicely mirrored by the back bench and each with some saddle leather trim. A beautiful ivory steering wheel with stylish brown center cap logo fronts the brown and woodgrain dash with clean vintage instrument cluster in place along with an added gauge underneath. The rest of the dash along with the interior styling is as warm as a New York Brownstone, and places tan carpet in conjunction with cloth sidewalls in the footwells and through to the back for a true living room feel. The headliner is in superb condition and the enormous trunk is fully finished in tan carpeting and cloth.
Drivetrain
Clean too is how we find the engine bay, housing a 257.1 L-head inline eight cylinder with a 2-barrel carburetor and a horsepower rating of 110. It's mated to Oldsmobile's Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission and power is received by the 4.30 gears in back. The carburetor, fuel lines, fuel pump, valve cover gaskets, water pump, and hoses have been replaced and the battery is new this year.
Undercarriage
Cleaned and repainted, the underside is ready for its close up Mr. DeMille! The pan gaskets have been replaced here as well and so conditions are dry. A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and drum brakes are behind each of the four powder coated wheels. Suspension includes coil springs front and rear with semi-trailing arms in back.
Drive-Ability
Elegance personified here as we roll this stately ride across our flat terrain and it provides limo-like comfort in its smooth ride and graceful advance. We have no complaints here and the only thing not working is the horn. All other functions as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
All of Oldsmobiles models from 1940 could be considered ""stately"" today, but the 90 is the king of the hill, the top dog, the model reserved for those of means. It pulls no punches in accentuating its quality and this one is a very fine example. At 210 inches, check your garage and let us know, and congrats in advance!
