"1940 Kiddie Car Classic Pedal Car
""The Gendron Wheel Company started business in the 1870's and at the time were the only manufacturer of wire wheels in America. By the 1920's they expanded their product lines to include bicycles, baby carriages, wagons and more. In 1928 Gendron added a new line of toy pull type trucks to their lineup with the ""Sampson"" branding. Gendron produced the Sampson line of toy trucks up to around 1930-31. They continued to produce pedal toys and other products into the early 1940s."" pressedsteelmetaltoys.com
For consignment, a 1940 Gendron Kiddie Car classic pedal car with unknown miles, (or city blocks), driven. This body style was marketed as a Ford, and our example presents in original condition, a rare find in a genre that is generally occupied by highly restored pieces.
Exterior
If there's such a thing as perfect patina, this car has it! The red paint shows extensive use and tells the purely American story of toddler playtime where reckless abandon caused run-ins with shrubs, fences, and probably some real cars. Scratches, scrapes, scuffs, and even a few dings serve as witness marks on this toy while the graphic grille, hood stripe, and simulated engine cover vents remain surprisingly crisp. The windscreen retains its plastic windows and headlights are portrayed by silver, teardrop discs. All four wheels have hubcaps and simulate white wall tires on red painted centers. The black bumper in front is nearly pristine, and we suspect a repaint though there are no service records with the car.
Interior
Rounded edges on the cabin prevent metal cuts and the need for tetanus shots, and the driver is afforded a simple vinyl mat over a flat seat and a three spoke steering wheel along with black pedal on the simple system of mobility, with a clear view of the sidewalk below.
Vintage pedal cars are special enough to have a spot here at Classic Auto Mall and to find a survivor is a rare treat! You might already be envisioning this ride with two stage Candy Apple Red paint and some fresh graphics, but you may also choose to display it just as is. As Mike Wolfe from American Pickers says, ""it's only original once"".
