"1940 Ford 85 Series Tudor Sedan
""The only place you'll find 8 cylinder performance is in an 8 cylinder engine. That's why the Ford V8 stands alone in the low price field! You can read about Ford performance, you can hear about it from pleased and proud Ford owners, or you can feel it for yourself. It's the most fun, firsthand. See what this big car really has under its hood. Test it in traffic, on the hills, or out where the roads run long and straight. We hope you'll be hard boiled about it. We know what this car can do, because we built it."" From a 1940 Ford print ad.
For consignment, a 1940 Ford 85 Series Tudor sedan showing 31,854 miles, but true the miles are unknown on the street rod version of an elegant American sedan. We've got some modern amenities here including a 12 volt system, a CD player, and power steering. Outside it remains unmistakably 40's, but those ""mag"" wheels filling the wells tell a different story. We call that a clue.
ExteriorPontoon fenders and a long, rounded back characterize this '40 Ford, dressed now in stunning two stage Maroon Metallic paint, a color that is understated and preferred by many. The graceful, modern front end is entirely individual in character, proclaimed the 1940 brochure, and there's simply no argument against it. A tapered grille that looks narrower than it is because of the body colored wings and this car also extracts heat from the engine with rows of louvers on the hood. The hood, mind you, has a rounded seam at the cowl. When was the last time you've seen that? Out back, modest blue dot Chevron shaped tail lights cling to the fenders while a split rear window allows some visibility but also creates a cozy cove for backseat passengers. Headlights some may call Eeyore eyes are trimmed in stainless rings and integrated marker lights, a fantastic design. 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels carry staggered sized tires that offer a slight rake to the stance, connected by the bridge of a rubber topped running board. Imperfections include significant damage to the small panel at the base of the grille, and a few scratches over a wheel opening.
Interior
Shades of gray layer the door panel with a diamond stitched insert and an embroidered stylized ""B"" on each door, along with carpeted kick panels, and both doors are in nice shape. Up front, the split bench also includes a dark gray diamond stitched insert and matching piping along the light gray framing and all materials and patterns flowing to the back seat are included on the sidewalls as well. Gray leather wraps the Lecarra steering wheel and a custom billet style cluster surround holds VDO gauges cleanly embedded in cutouts. In the center, a Kenwood AM/FM/CD player is poised to play, fitted into the top of the dash and piggybacked by a tachometer. The shifter rises from an open floor covered in gray carpet mats for a clean coordinated look, completed by the velvety gray headliner above. The large trunk is lined with gray cloth panels and houses a battery box and spare.
Drivetrain
It's still a V8 but now a 350ci from the 70's, gleaming with chrome and topped by a Weiand intake and Carter 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, a TH350 3-speed automatic which sends power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Brakes are configured as discs in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
We would classify this as very clean underneath with an X-frame taking center stage and allowing the dual exhaust to pass through where they are intercepted by stock style mufflers before heading straight back. A transverse leaf spring makes up the front suspension and leaf springs are out back. We do note some red drops on the transmission pan, and a black one or two on the oil pan.
Drive-Ability
If this interior doesn't look inviting to you, check your eyeglasses prescription! It's like a warm, gray living room! The 350 starts right up and lets out an impressive exhaust note and we put this big Tudor into Drive and take a spin around the test loop. Fine power, straight tracking, and with dual side mirrors, decent visibility. Not many bells and whistles which increases the car's chances for a perfect functionality score, and we take the A+ driver back to the mall! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A well built street rod that's not over the top with retina searing colors, crazy flames, or wild body mods. Call it the proper gentlemen's car with a trustworthy engine, clean lines, and plenty of room for the family and their stuff. Hot rod heaven, right there!
