"1936 Chevrolet Master Business Coupe
""The first thing the driver of a new car must do is to familiarize himself with the various controls provided for its proper handling. This does not apply to the beginner alone, as although there are many points of similarity between all cars, there are also important differences; and it is not wise regardless of previous experience, to drive a new car before fully understanding what each control is for and how to use it."" From the 1936 Chevrolet owner's manual and words that are even more true today as each specialty car here at Classic Auto Mall has unique modifications and features!
For consignment, a 1936 Chevrolet Master Business coupe showing 2,866 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a street rod version of a former working man's car, the renowned business coupe being the body style of choice for traveling salesmen who went door to door nearly 100 years before the internet made purchasing too easy and human interaction nearly obsolete.
Exterior
You might be a Mopar geek if you recognize the origins of this color. It's Viper Red and more specifically, 1999 Viper Red that shines like lip gloss on lipstick, covering every panel of this sizable car including the running boards. The business end of this car is the tail where a huge decklid is part of the round rump, showcasing that red paint interrupted only by the gas filler cap, while two oval tail lights sit low on the fenders over the straight chrome bumper. The car displays a raked stance sitting on 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust five spoke chrome wheels carrying 215/60R15 tires. In front, the tall and stately grille is color matched to the body and framed in polished metal, all under a fantastic winged hood ornament. The exposed engine has plenty of polished parts and flames coloring the valve covers for a little extra showmanship. The paint and trim is excellent on the car and we could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
The Chevy bowtie is embossed into the tan leather door panels, along with a pleated upper insert, and both look fresh and clean. More modern bucket seats occupy the cabin combining some sport contouring with soft luxury cushioning with the driver's side showing a touch of wear, and both enjoying electronic adjustments. Behind the seats, the package area is finished with more pleated leather and that Chevy bowtie, along with clean tan carpet. Back up front, a Grant wood rimmed steering wheel fronts a polished faceplate on the dash housing white face Autometer gauges with red needles to go along with the red paint. A large tach stands alone to the right, embedded in the metal dash and framed with a ring of metal. A Genie shifter rises from the floor which is nicely carpeted in tan. Both the headliner and the finished trunk are in excellent condition, ready for show and go!
Drivetrain
And speaking of go, you'll find that the 355ci gets the job done, fueled by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and backed by a TH400 3-speed automatic with a shift kit. Power gets routed to a 12 bolt rear with 3.08 gears, while power disc brakes front and rear rein in that power when needed.
Undercarriage
With some attention to detail, red paint is prominent on the frame, axles, and suspension components while a finned differential cover adds a bit more eye candy on the clean underside. A polished flywheel cover and transmission pan are a nice touch and are free of oil, as is the oil pan, with the exception of a single drop. Dual exhaust runs from headers into FlowMaster mufflers, then almost immediately turns to the side where it exits via rectangular tips under the running board. Coil over suspension is up front and leaf springs are found in the rear.
Drive-Ability
We go from 1936 on the outside to more modern surroundings on the inside to give this red flyer a romp around the test loop. The 355 cuber comes to life with an exhaust note we might describe as healthy, and as we roll through the paces. The car tracks straight, handles well, and has more than enough power on hand. Dual mirrors help with visibility and the only thing we note not working is the horn. All other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Let's say the massive trunk doesn't hold all of your stuff. Or, it's finished so nice you just don't want to put anything back there. Well, the car also has a tow hitch, so a trailer with extra cargo space is certainly an option! This is a well done street rod that is ready to go and make an impression with its bright Viper Red paint, trusty V8, and legendary business coupe proportions.
