"1935 Ford Model 48 V8 Series 5 Window Coupe
""Unquestionably one of the handsomest cars on the road. Wide front seat has plenty of room for three. Wide, deep shelf for bags and parcels. Rear window lowers. Luxurious upholstery and appointments. Cowl lamps have been eliminated from all Ford cars to preserve the sweeping lines. Parking lights are included in headlamps. This same car, without DeLuxe features, may be obtained at lower cost. A rumble seat is optional in both types at extra cost."" From the 1935 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1935 Ford Model 48 V8 series 5 window coupe with a title verified 84,092 actual miles. Formerly a Texas car, our consignor states he is just the third owner and the car presents as mostly original. In other words, it's a refreshing take that hasn't been rodded!
Exterior
Sure, the single stage Dearborn Blue is a fantastic color, but when you combine that with red wire wheels and white walls, the whole car seems to pop. There's also a red pinstripe that ties it all together and the 16-inch wheels are accompanied by a covered spare clinging to the black of the car; not only good to have but adding an aesthetic element to this side of the car too. Blue dot tail lights are the proverbial cherries on top! In front, the tall grille cants rearward and is flanked by headlight buckets and dual horns while the egg crate hood vents are distinctive for this generation of Ford V8's; very few cars dared to offer such prominent extractors. The rounded cab of the five window with its rubberized top is also unique and is situated above the running boards that connect the extended fenders. Imperfections include typical single stage dull spots and inclusions, a peppering of bubbles and chips on just about every panel, scratches, crazing, some rust on the windshield reveal, deglazing of the glass, and deplating on the bumper.
Interior
Tan mohair door panels present in very good shape and the same could be said about the split bench. Finger grooves line the three spoke steering wheel that fronts the gray painted dash holding the original, ivory gauge configuration with some patina noted on the odometer. Ivory knobs occupy the center while a tan floor covering surrounds the shifter and handbrake below, all in good shape. The mohair headliner and windlace remain in excellent condition too while the trunk is barren and shows signs of use while offering ample floor space.
Drivetrain
Behind the hood covers is a 221ci flathead V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and 3-speed manual transmission behind it. Power is routed to the rear axle with 4.11 gears on board. Red's headers have been added and our consignor states the battery is newer. The car runs on a six volt system.
Undercarriage
Under the rear apron, we note a good bit of rust, but the rest of the underside is clean overall with some light patina and light residual oil about. Posies drop springs occupy the transverse leaf spring locations and drum brakes are found on all four wheels. The exhaust comes from headers and into Smithy mufflers terminating through straight pipes under the bumper.
Drive-Ability
Though not stated in the 1935 brochure, this is a sporty model touted for its storage capacity that's just this side of a business coupe. The flathead V8 does its thing and carries us onto the test loop for a spirited ride on newer Coker white walls. We note the brake lights and tail lights are not working but all other functions on this simple cruiser operate as they should. We did note that the car tends to pop out of 2nd gear when decelerating. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This '35 has a lot going for it. Straight panels, mostly original presentation, and a mohair interior that hasn't disintegrated. If you're looking for a true classic in a manageable size, we think this nimble five window coupe would be the ideal choice. With a little TLC, this could easily be a show winner though our attorneys restrain us from making that a promise!
