"1934 Ford Model 40 Pickup
""It's a different kind of car, this New Ford V8 for 1934. There's no experiment about it. Everything in it is tried and tested and hundreds of thousands of Ford V8s have gone millions of miles in actual service, and that shows what it will do. Its basic design remains. Ford V8 drivers would be the last to permit any change there. The new V8 is the natural successor to the Ford V8s of previous years. It is the best car of all the many good cars the Ford Motor Company has ever built."" From a 1934 print ad.
For consignment, a 1934 Ford Model 40 pickup showing 74,433 miles but true the miles are unknown. This is a clean example with a flathead V8, an all around show truck that's clean from stem to stern.
Exterior
Single stage Vineyard Green has just the right amount of shine, complemented by the black fenders and running boards, and sharply contrasted by the 17-inch yellow wire wheels, all five of them including the fender mounted spare. This all American classic look is further solidified by the chrome ribbon bumper in front, the matching yellow pinstripe, and the windshield visor. Out back, wooden stakes line the bed while black paint covers the bed floor itself. The rear will give you views of an unbranded tailgate, two small tail lights, and tires that are skinny by today's standards. The face presents with a black grille, black light bar, and a black painted horn. There bubbling along the bottom edge of the truck which comprises the extent of imperfections we find on this nicely preserved truck.
Interior
The model of simplicity is represented by the inner doors which, as was common with work trucks for many decades, does not have any kind of fancy door panel, it's simply painted the color of the exterior and wears simple hardware for opening the door and rolling down the window. A simple and true to period bench seat occupies the cab and is covered in lovely brown vinyl and presents in excellent condition. The 4 spoke vintage steering wheel front a utilitarian dash with the main gauges in the center and an added triple pod with water temp, oil pressure, and fuel level, all good stuff to know and easier to read than the vintage meters. Honey colored wood covers the floor where the tall shifter rises to meet the driver's hand. Up above, no need for sound deadening or dress up, the ceiling is painted steel of the body.
Drivetrain
Clean and show worthy, a 221ci flathead V8 occupies the engine compartment, rated at 85 horses and carrying a 2-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual sets the truck in motion and spins the driveshaft back to 3.54 gears in the rear. Mechanical drum brakes are on board front and rear.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath as well where only a few drops of oil and some road dust veers from this being a nearly spotless underside. The single exhaust, small by today's standards, flows through a stock style muffler and eventually finds its way to the outside through a straight steel pipe. Transverse leaf springs, painted satin black and clean, are found on the front and rear. The wood planks of the bed are painted green and are wonderfully clean.
Drive-Ability
Who doesn't love a Flathead? It comes to life and propels this truck, and 85 horsepower proves to be plenty to get from point A to point B and bright yellow wheels announce our arrival long before the exhaust note comes within earshot. It's all business inside and out and without the bells and whistles that would come decades later, everything that is functional on the truck operates as it should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This truck checks all the boxes. It's the right size, has the right engine, and sports a clean interior. It's Americana on wheels and one that would be right at home in our rural home of Morgantown but can be appreciated no matter where you live! Own a museum or Ford dealership?
