1930 Marquette (Buick) Model 34 Sport Roadster
The Marquette Motor Company was a short lived manufacturer established by GM in 1909, closing in 1912. The name was revived in 1930 by Buick as a junior brand and between 1929 and 1931, just 7,224 cars were built ranging from sedans and coupes to phaetons and roadsters.
For consignment, a 1930 Marquette (Buick) Model 34 Sport Roadster showing 41,071 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was originally restored in the 70's and that restoration was refreshed some 20 years later. This rare car is the first Marquette to grace the Hallowed Halls of Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
Its handsome color combination includes Pale Yellow on the body, black on the fenders, base, and running boards, and striking orange wire wheels accentuated by the spare on each front fender. The cabin is bordered by brown with an orange pinstripe, stylistically consistent with the time and adding a bit of drama as the color juts forward to delineate the hood. More drama up front with fog lights that match the headlights in size, perched over a tubular chrome bumper with an undulating profile while cowl lights emerge from polished trim that bridges the area, matching the substantial polished parts of the window frame and A-pillars. Our canvas top has been replaced at some point and is in excellent condition, housing an oval glass window with more polished trim in back, just ahead of a real trunk. Imperfections include typical chipping of the hood hinges, various other chips around the car including some larger edge chips on the hood, and quite a bit of bubbling throughout.
Interior
Simple and smooth saddle leather door panels set the stage for the interior walls and open up to a column tufted bench seat which shows numerous patina creasing and scratches but is in otherwise good condition. The rumble seats mirrors the materials and is generally nice, also showing some light wear and a small tear near a mounting bracket. Its 1930's simplicity up front with a wood rimmed 4 spoke steering wheel fronting a body colored dash with central instrument cluster with knobs and presenting cleanly. A rubberized brown mat covers the floor where the shifter and handbrake reside.
Drivetrain
Behind the engine covers is a 212.8ci L-head inline six cylinder rated at 67.5 horsepower and fed fuel through a Marvel 1-barrel carburetor. Marquette is embossed on the attractive blue block and a Muncie 3-speed manual transmission is attached, routing power to the rear axle with 4.54 gears. The car remains on a 6-volt system.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust and oxidation underneath but in generally clean condition. A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and terminates out back. Mechanical brakes are at all four corners and suspension utilizes leaf springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
It's an unusual brand but a familiar configuration and the six cylinder propels the car through its paces with ease. We ride with the top up but of course, topless would be the way to go in this yellow beauty/ Other than the fuel gauge, all operational items on the car work as they should. A kill switch has been added under the dash. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
You could have a Ford, Chevrolet, or even Plymouth from 1930. But the opportunity to own a Marquette is a rare one and this car, although not perfect, would be a showstopper due to its unique status as Buick's short lived junior brand. And if you happen to own an automobile museum, certainly a Marquette would be a worthy addition!
