"1930 Ford Model A Standard Phaeton
""After a trip of approximately 45 hours from Marquette the ore boat docks at the Rouge plant. Hulett unloaders start removing the cargo which is transferred to the High Line and from there to the skip car which charges the blast furnaces. In sixteen hours the ore has been reduced to foundry iron, which is carried in a molten state to the foundry and has been mixed with the proper proportion of scrap and poured into moulds (sic). The casting now goes to its first machining operation. This machining is performed in the foundry building in line with the Ford practice of continuous operation."" Excerpted from the 1929 Ford Industries booklet discussing the shortening of the production cycle.
For consignment, a 1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Standard Phaeton with 300 miles on the numbers matching engine since being rebuilt by Schwalm's and 32,677 non verifiable miles showing on the odometer. This storied Phaeton was owned by a military man who brought the car from Hawaii to California when he was transferred and it was featured in the John Wayne movie ""In Harm's Way.""
Exterior
Ford's move to offer colors other than black resulted in some fine choices, attractive shades often in natural tones like the Tan that now adorns this vessel. The body is the perfect complement to the standard black components including the fenders, base, running boards, shoulder line molding, and the canvas top that distends over the cabin to connect to the windscreen frame. Orange wire wheels add some classic pizazz to the car and includes the spare on the left fender. Headlights are accompanied by cowl lights and a chrome radiator shell falls between them. The rear features two tail lights and a full chrome bumper with added LED lights. Imperfections include cracking paint, edgewear, scratches, scuffs, and chips throughout, dings, typical chipping on the hood hinge, surface rust near the side molding.
Interior
All four door panels are made from Saddle vinyl and present in nice condition with the fronts including pleated pockets. Front and rear benches are also wearing saddle vinyl and in great shape with some fading on the top surfaces of the side pieces. A four spoke steering wheel fronts a body colored dash with the polished central gauge cluster and a rubberized floor covering is fitted and clean and where you'll find the tall shifter and hand brake.
Drivetrain
Nearly 100 years old and retaining its original engine, the clean bay reveals the numbers matching 201ci inline four cylinder, rebuilt and including the documentation to prove it. It's fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor and mated to a 3-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear axle and 3.78 gears.
Undercarriage
The clean and simple underside includes invasive rust on several sections of a belly pan, but none on structural components. A single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler and terminates near the rear axle while mechanical drum brakes are found both front and rear. As was standard, transverse leaf springs make up the suspension at both ends.
Drive-Ability
The big open cabin provides a comfortable perch and our crack staff, accustomed to old school start up methods, got this one trotting around the test loop in fine fashion. This is a good running Model A on which all functions operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Model A's are consistent sellers here at the mall and this fine example has the potential of open air cruising, not to mention being the perfect parade candidate! The mayor of your small or large town can wave to the crowd from the comfortable back seat while your well sorted numbers matching iron block churns along with confidence.
