"1927 Chevrolet Capitol 4 Door Sedan
""The 1927 Chevrolet Capitol series casts a long shadow over the annals of automotive history, marking a pivotal moment for Chevrolet as it fiercely competed with Ford's dominance. Born from the bustling industrial age, the Capitol was Chevrolet's answer to the Model T and played a crucial role in establishing Chevrolet as a household name. Notably, it was during the Capitol's era that Chevrolet first outsold Ford in 1927, turning the tide in the enduring rivalry. This vehicle not only signified a shift in consumer preference but also showcased Chevrolet's commitment to innovation and affordability."" Thx metrommp.com
For consignment, a 1927 Chevrolet Capitol 4 door sedan showing 23,932 but the true miles are unknown. Owned by our consignor for 10 years during which time a complete tune up was conducted along with a carburetor rebuild and interior kit from Lebaron Bonney was added.
Exterior
It's the stamped steel disc wheels that get your attention first as cars were transitioning away from wooden spokes, painted to match the Alpine Green that covers the car and does so with a gold hub and hardware. The green body is sandwiched between black that frames the window, a black vinyl roof, and the fenders and running board below, giving the car the typical period handsome profile. It's upright and stately with perfectly square windows and four doors with the rear set opening suicide style. Marker lights have been added to the car, below the ribbon bumper in front and back where we find a singular stop light mounted on the spare bracket in the center. The vertical windshield is shaded by a fixed visor while side mirrors ride high on the A-pillars and these are adjustable. The metal on the car could benefit from some polishing and the paint, at distance, looks good. Up close we find touched up areas, paint runs, uneven filler on a door corner, missing paint, and perhaps a piece of masking tape left in place after a session of black paint. There's also a scuff on a fender edge.
Interior
Green corduroy cloth covers the doors and is in overall good condition with minor wear near the pull lever on the driver's door. The LeBaron Bonney interior includes the handsome material covering the bench seat, channel tufted and clean and mirrored by the rear bench where leg and head room is vast and a robe loop is provided. Finger grooves cover the entire wood rim of the steering wheel which fronts the simplest of dashboards housing just the choke, light switch, barrel style speedometer, odometer, oil and amp gauge on a patina black panel. A ribbed rubber mat covers the floor from which the tall shifter emerges while a green felt headliner looms overhead in excellent shape.
Drivetrain
Behind the engine cover is a clean 171ci inline 4 cylinder with the rebuilt 1-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain is rated at 26 horsepower which is sent to the rear axle with 3.82 gears. Our consignor states he replaced the brake drums on the mechanical brakes which are found on the rear wheels only.
Undercarriage
The clean underside reveals some wood construction and red oxide primer, along with black components in great shape. There's some oil on the pan back to the transmission, but we all leak a bit at 98 years old, so we're not judging, just taking note. The knuckles have some fresh grease and leaf springs are clean and found front and rear.
Drive-Ability
We were told to double clutch to get going and so we did, the four cylinder running well and idling smoothly. On skinny tires, the car tracks straight and the comfortable cabin is like a parlor on wheels, affording very good visibility and a relatively high sitting position. The limited functions offered all operate with the exception of the brake light. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
That's right, 98 years old and still ticking! What a fantastic example of early American luxury at an affordable price. We refer back to metrommp for the closer, ""The 1927 Chevrolet Capitol stands as a testament to an era when automobiles became more than just transportation-they became a symbol of freedom and progress. Its legacy is reflected in every Chevrolet that rolled off the assembly line thereafter-a lineage of accessibility and innovation that began with this humble yet groundbreaking vehicle.""
