Founded in Cleveland in 1900, the White Motor Company quickly earned a reputation for engineering excellence, particularly in the field of commercial vehicles. Renowned for their robust construction and reliability, White trucks and buses became trusted workhorses across industries, from urban transit and freight hauling to national park transportation. By the 1920s, White had established itself as a leading supplier of multi-passenger vehicles designed to meet the growing demand for organized tourism and public conveyance.
The Model 20A sight-seeing bus offered here represents a fascinating and highly evocative example of that era. Thought to have begun life as a tour bus, it would have carried visitors during the formative years of city exploration. In a time when road rules were less structured, the presence of multiple noise-making devices, including an exhaust whistle, hand horn, and a siren, speaks to the practical realities of navigating roads shared with pedestrians and other vehicles. It even has an auxiliary tire inflation pump.
This example benefits from an exceptional degree of originality and a well-documented chain of ownership. Prior to its acquisition by the Osborne Collection of Mentor, Ohio in 1985, it was owned by Robert Hunker of Peninsula, OH with earlier history placing it in North Carolina during the 1950s. Notably, it has remained within the same general Ohio region in which it was originally constructed, an uncommon continuity that further enhances its authenticity.
The bus was acquired by the St. Louis Car Museum in June 2015 and subsequently serviced that year to running condition. Additional recommissioning work was performed in 2017 and again in 2021 to facilitate brief operational use. While it has not been started in recent years, the vehicle has been carefully preserved in a climate-controlled environment, maintaining its highly original presentation.
A compelling artifact from the early days of American tourism and commercial transport, this 1924 White Model 20A offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a vehicle that bridges industrial innovation with the romance of national exploration. With its Ohio origins, distinctive equipment, and remarkable preservation, it stands as a uniquely characterful survivor of a formative period in motoring history.
