1920 Steelcraft Cadillac Pedal Car
Steelcraft toys were made by Murray Ohio Manufacturing Co., a Cleveland firm that opened in 1919 to make parts for that recent invention, the automobile. By 1923, Murray also was making toy cars using the steel and production methods it used to manufacture full-size car parts. This diversity helped Murray survive the Depression. The company's pedal cars, airplanes, coaster wagons, bicycles and smaller wheeled toys were marked 'Steelcraft', the identification seen by today's collector.
For consignment, a 1920 Steelcraft Cadillac pedal car that combines elements of restoration with bits of patina that help tell the story of this once beloved toy.
Exterior
The maroon body is enhanced by a yellow stripe that flows rearward, expanding as it travels to the cabin, and picked up by the pinstripe on the wheels. Just behind the tin can headlights are louvers, just as you would find on a real car to vent engine heat. Just like the real cars of the time, the fenders and connecting running board are painted in contrasting black. Up front, the grille and simulated motometer retain some period patina as the Cadillac label is weathered and worn, the plastic headlights have yellowed, and the Steelcraft license plate shows its age. Other external features include a plexiglass windshield in black frame, an external horn, and polished hubcaps.
Interior
The steel seat enjoys a rounded upper and the driver is provided with a triple spoke black steering wheel and series of vintage gauge decals on the dash panel. Down below, the steel pedals are connected to black painted rails and levers and everything is intact.
Undercarriage
Red disc wheels carry solid, round edged tires in good shape. The pedal linkage and axles show a bit of patina and typical wear on the moving parts, but everything is intact. No rust is noted.
This would have been a coveted toy in 1920 and emulates the Cadillac Model 59, roadster of course and short wheel base. It now serves as fantastic garage art or as an indoor display item and guaranteed conversation piece!
