Porsche 914

The Porsche 914, or VW-Porsche 914, is a sports car designed and manufactured collaboratively by Volkswagen and Porsche from 1969 to 1976. At that time, Porsche wanted to replace their entry-level 912 and Volkswagen wanted a new sports coupe to replace the Volkswagen Type 34 Karmann Ghia. Most of Volkswagen's development was handled by Porsche as part of an ongoing agreement, and Volkswagen needed to contract out one last project to Porsche to fulfill the contract. The 914 was that project. However, shortly after the first 914 prototype was presented, the Volkswagen chairman died, leaving no established connection with Porsche. Quickly, the verbal agreement between Volkswagen and Porsche fell apart, leaving the 914 to be a battleground model ultimately produced by both parties for some duration of time. And, it would appear to be a plan that worked, as the 914 was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1970.

Originally intended to be sold with a flat four-cylinder engine as a Volkswagen and with a flat six-cylinder engine as a Porsche, Porsche decided that having Volkswagen and Porsche models sharing the same body would be risky for business in the domestic American market. In the end, the 914 was only available as a targa-topped two-seat roadster powered by either a flat-4 or flat-6 engine and produced by Porsche in the US. There were several design changes over the course of the 7 model years introduced by Porsche, including painted bumpers; adding and removing bumper guards; changing the mobility of the passenger seats; tweaking vinyl designs, gauge appearance, and air vent configurations; and adding anti-roll bars, to name a few.
