Ford Mustang Concepts

Thursday, September 5th, 2013
.
.
Found this article on CarBuzz about concept Mustang designs.  Crazy when you really think about how things could have gone.  I mean some of these are just plain BAD.  The one that most resembles an actual production Mustang is that horrendous 65 body with FOUR DOORS.  Thank you very much Ford for not green-lighting that one.
They have a certain futuristic feels as most concept renderings do but some of them were straight spaceships.  To see this evolution and how the Mustang could have been just another one of the world’s ugliest cars and maybe not have made it out of the early 70s is very interesting.  As a Mustang fan myself, I am just a tad nervous to see what the future holds.

In the meantime, I can recommend you search for a real Stang here-

.

.

These are the concepts that never left the corral. Thank God… 🙂
In Mustang’s storied 50-year existence, numerous concepts and prototypes never made the jump to production. Over the decades, the Lee A Iacocca commissioned pony car has maintained its original characteristics of sporty affordability. Yet as everyone’s favorite secretary’s car evolved, plenty of ponies were sacrificed throughout the generations. Ford is celebrating these forgotten Mustangs, opening its archives ahead of the 2015’s model expected debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show where it first took a bow.
In the early sixties Ford designers played around with sporty coupe themes based on the Falcon resulting in the Avventura, Avanti and Allegro, whose fastback profile was eventually adopted by the Mustang MkIII. The Allegro Design study was where the Stang’s basic proportions: long hood, short deck, and compact greenhouse, were born. Two-seater studies followed along with the 1962 Mustang I, a mid-engine coupe concept that bore aesthetic cues of the 1966 GT40. In 1965, Ford produced a four-door concept, considered to be its first major styling faux pas, and in 1966 a station-wagon concept followed.
The Mach 1 and Mach 2 Concepts represented the last of the Sixties prototypes, and in 1970 the Mustang Milano broke cover in Chicago, whose extended nose found its way onto the 1971 model. The final three Mustang Concepts include the 1980 Ghia-penned RSX rally special based on the third-gen Fox-body Stang, the “Bruce Jenner” and “Rambo” concepts from 1990, and the 1992 Mach III Concept, which offered clues as to the fourth-gen’s design direction.

Girls posing in front of cars is quite possibly one of the most beautiful things in the world.  However, sometimes you just look at what is going on in these pictures and you just have to say “what the hell are you doing?”.  Gotta admire the girls still trying to look hot in any position we put them in.  (A) for effort sweetheart…

Bringing back the Chevelle SS can be easier than thought

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

Bringing back the Chevelle SS can be easier than thought…

What Chevrolet can do to bring back its legendary musclecar!
We here on GMI have discussed the RWD saga in all its forms and 50 shades of grey. But I have a new one. Instead of Chevrolet getting it’s long longed-for RWD Chevelle from the Zeta or Alpha or Alpha+ or Omega whatever platforms, why not Sigma?

Why not re-skin the outgoing CTS, above, as a Chevelle as I have done here? Sigma is a good and competent platform that simply is no longer going to be up to competing with BMW etc., but it’s perfectly suited for a more bread-and-butter Chevy Chevelle. The best thing is that GM has fully written off the cost of Sigma, as it is pretty much just so much scrap production equipment and presses now. So if it were re-skinned as a Chevy and has the interior gutted and fitted with a new interior taken from the Chevy parts bin with bits of Cruze, Malibu and Impala, then it can keep going at least two more cycles.

I have deliberately left the costly glasshouse as is and only re-skinned the outer panels so all inner panels stay the same to keep the price down to an MCE level. Ship the line to Mexico if necessary to lower build costs, but I think as a Chevelle it may sell in larger numbers than as a Cadillac and reap better economies of scale cost savings. A current V6 Sigma CTS and V6 ‘14 Impala weigh the same, so if you can put a 2.5 Four in the Impala you can use it as a base engine in the Sigma CTS-based Chevelle.

Let’s take a look at potential engines, starting with a base 2.5, then 2.0 Turbo, a 3.6 V6, and the 4.3 V6 truck engine for those would have bought a lazy but torque-laden V8 in the old days. Because of CAFÉ, GM would probably want to keep V6 Twin-Turbo, LT1 and LS9 engines for limited-run SS performance models.

OK. So what haven’t I thought of that makes it a bad idea; and what haven’t I thought of that may make it even better? Anyone?
