"2012 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible
The fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro is a pony car that was manufactured by American automobile manufacturer Chevrolet from 2010 to 2015 model years. By spring 2005, the first concept car of the fifth-generation of the Camaro was in development. Several sketches of both exterior and interior were drawn to show how the car was going to look; those sketches were shown months later to the public. Once sketches were finished, the Camaro was constructed as a clay model which was complete by fall 2005 and was shown to the public in early 2006. After the public introduction of the concept cars, Chevrolet started constructing several camouflaged test mules of the Camaro which were manufactured by Holden costing about $250,000 each. These vehicles were used for crash testing, test driving, and to handle extreme weather conditions such as in Canada, Arizona, and Australia. By January 2008, Chevrolet announced that the test mules will not be camouflaged, and various images of the Camaro were released in the same year, including pre-production models.
GM did the unthinkable at the end of the 2002 model year, they killed off the Camaro from their line up. The bowtie faithful had 8 long years to wait for the return of the Mustang slayer and in this writer's humble opinion, the wait was worth it. Retro style, hopped up horsepower and a slew of options made the new Camaro one for the record books with 129,405 produced for the 2010 model year return. The Camaro was back and in a big way, offered for consignment, a 2012 1SS version of the 5th generation Camaro in drop top guise. A one owner car, having only logged 10,106 actual miles and dressed up with some snappy factory installed options along with a few mild personal customized touches, we have a winner here waiting for you in our Hallowed Halls.
Exterior
The Camaro took on a very menacing look for 2012 with its V shaped front, deep set headlights, long rear scooped hood, raked windshield and of course the low convertible top. Our example is bathed in Silver Ice Metallic and has painted orange wide racing stripes running through the center of this car. Save for some taillight bezels and the chrome tipped exhaust the car is devoid of chrome trimmings. Although snappy billet grilles have been inserted in both the upper and lower front fascia. True to the window sticker, the RS package is on this ride and consists of HID headlights with an integrated halo ring, a Nascar inspired rear spoiler, RS specific taillights and the 20"" Midnight Silver painted aluminum wheels. A black canvas convertible top is on, along with a rear glass window. Many styling cues harken back to the most loved 1969 Camaro, fog lamps in the lower valance where signal makers once resided, and the rear quarter panel gill dress up which were also an option on the '69 model. The design engineers hit the mark spot on!
Interior
Lowering the top with a flip of a switch, and we see gray cloth bucket seats with charcoal black tubs looking very nice with light soiling on the front of the lower cushion. These are high backed buckets and feature some SS embossing on the headrests and contoured wrap-around bolsters to keep you firmly planted in the seat. A sea of gray carpeting covers the floors and gives some foot comfort to the rear passengers too. A curved dash which is mostly black has an orange highlighting strip going through the center with an homage to the orange stripes taken from the exterior's inspiration. A very clean center console races through the seats and has a series of 4 display gauges in front right next to where it will rise to the dash center. In this section we note an AM/FM/CD stereo system from the factory that is also XM Satellite capable. The driver has a rally wheel to hold on to and in front is a futuristic styled dash with dual rectangle gauges and a central display between them, call it retro! A few features of note are a heads-up display, StabiliTrak ESP system as well as an added roll bar for not only looks but extra safety.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an all buttoned up silver and black clad 6.2 liter V8. This mill specs out at 400hp. It is fed with EFI and has a 6L80E with optional Tap Shift 6-speed transmission. The rear axle weighs in at 3.27 and has limited slip.
Undercarriage
All clean and black underneath with only a hint of road dirt. All solid steel construction along with cast aluminum parts for the suspension to save some weight. Front suspension is MacPherson struts, and the rear is an independent multilink system. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and are Brembo 4 piston caliper brakes. Original exhaust with showroom condition pipes and mufflers are on and seen underneath.
Drive-Ability
A fast car able to keep pace with pretty much anything you can throw at it. It runs very smoothly, has great acceleration, and fine handling. All functions are working swimmingly and even though I was tempted to take another lap, I restrained myself for the sake of preserving the low low miles.
A very nicely optioned 2012 Camaro SS convertible with great paint, nice orange racing stripes, and a black drop top. An orange highlighted gray and black interior and very low miles are just a few of the highlights you'll be grabbed by in our East hallway where this car resides, but...probably not for long!
