"2003 Chevrolet Silverado SS Extended Cab Short Bed Pickup
Ten years after the last Chevy 454 SS pickup truck rolled off the assembly line, the company jumped back into the performance truck world with the AWD, extended cab Silverado SS. As Car and Driver wrote at the time, ""With time comes progress, and Chevy's latest screamer truck is refined where the 454 was crude. It's still plenty quick, mind you, but now it goes about its business like a seasoned veteran rather than a hotshot rookie. Swift. Deliberately. Controlled"". Well done, Car and Driver. Well done.
For consignment, a 2 owner 2003 Silverado SS with a title-verified 2,850 actual miles and some tasty mods for a boost in performance, an increase in practicality, and improvements on the already handsome look. Muscle truck lovers unite! Here's one that's roomier than a Syclone, more usable in bad weather than a Lightning, and easier on gas than an SRT10!
Exterior
About 60% of the 2003 Silverado SS's, (commonly referred to by enthusiasts as ""SSS""), were black and our truck is one of them, dressed head to toe in Black Onyx. The monochromatic coverage of a single color on the SS gives the vehicle an aggressive and immediately recognizable disposition. The only thing that breaks the black are the SS emblems. Even the door handles are glossy black. The face is enhanced by a polished aluminum billet grille set and that includes the low air intake ducts which are characteristic design cues on the SS. An LS Series Back Flip tonneau cover shields the bed which in turn is covered with a Rugged bed liner. The 20-inch wheels are chrome versions of the factory wheels with the Chevy bowtie center cap and the original wheels are included with your purchase. The paint and body are in fantastic condition, and we were hard pressed to find any flaws in this nearly showroom freshrig.
Interior
Open the front door, then you can open the rear doors which have no external handles. Now you've got barn door style access to the entire interior. Charcoal molded plastic door panels with gray cloth inserts greet you in familiar GM configuration. The back doors include a cup holder and storage bin on the narrower doors. The front leather bucket seats have bulky cushions, pull down armrests, and electric adjustments. The less deep rear bench, with the same pillowy quality, is still big enough for adults as headroom is more than adequate. The leather wrapped steering wheel is in excellent condition and sits in front of the white faced gauges in a cluster that is thorough and easy to read. Standard fare for the center stack which contains the factory AM/FM/CD radio and heater/AC controls. An SS badge is prominent on the dash lest you forget you're driving a high performance Silverado. A big center console contains a storage bin, open storage, and a cup holder. The carpet, headliner, overhead console and just about everything else on the interior are in like new condition.
Drivetrain
Things get interesting here as the stock 6.0 liter LQ9 V8 is boosted with a Magnuson TVS Radix supercharger system massaged with a Superchips Flashpaq tune. It's fuel injected of course, and propelled by a 4L65E 4-speed automatic transmission tied to 4.10 gears at both ends which split the torque 32/68, front rear output shafts, respectively. The engine bay is clean, and the modification looks as it would if the factory built it. Power disc brakes are found, (and needed), on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
All very clean and tidy underneath. We note some surface rust on the frame, the driveshaft, brake parts, and various hardware components. Stainless steel dual exhaust intersect stainless steel mufflers and the SS chrome twin tips are angled outward behind each back tire. Torsion bar suspension is found in the front while leaf springs still reside in the back.
Drive-Ability
As the owner of several sport trucks, I feel particularly qualified to analyze this vehicle. Plus, my boss told me to do it, so there's that. Anyway, the sound is a big step above a stock SSS since it's exiting from both sides. The cabin feels large and comfortable and although SSS's were lowered two inches from the factory, it's still a high and commanding truck. The 6.0 is no slouch but when you add the roots style blower, horsepower is up and so is torque and you will likely feel it in the seat. We babied the truck along the loop, but you could tell, there was more to give. Lots more. All the bells and whistles worked as intended and with less than 3,000 miles, we'd expect nothing less.
The Silverado SS was produced from 2003 to 2007 and while some were readily used as capable work trucks, others were put away and recognized as potential future collectibles. Well, the future is here McFly, and sport trucks, muscle trucks, and resto modded trucks are hot in the marketplace. This fine example is a glossy, glowing example of a performance truck.
